They pick very liberal places (Berkeley, Charlottesville, Boston) knowing they'll get more of a reaction, more chance of violence and attention, which leads to more recruits. It's textbook. Easiest way to deescalate is to ignore, or just mock. To match their intensity just gives it credence.
