Or, how about this angle? Opie did create the powerhouse O&A used to be. He plucked nobody Anthony out of nowhere and somehow realized Jimmy would be a good fit. If you listen to the pre-Obama days, it was a revolving door of great comedians just stopping by at any given time just to hang cause it was a fun atmosphere. Opie was tolerable and really did contribute a lot too. He constantly plugged these guys and really helped launch careers of some comedians such as Bobby, and Patrice. So everything is going along nicely, and then Anthony's racism starts to surface. It gets uglier and uglier. (especially after Patrice dies) They try to laugh it off, but Opie is not only uncomfortable with this, he's also put in a position to defend him to management. Slowly, comedians stop coming. The, 'they're to big for us now' is just an excuse. I believe this began because of Anthony's blatant racism and hatred. If you listen to him during Treyvon Martin or any thing that has to do with Obama, he really is frothing at the mouth! Anyhow, I think Opie saw it slipping away. Anthony's drinking and fucking young girls at his age, Opie knew it wasn't going to end well and there wasn't a damned thing he could do to stop it.. Did he handle it well? No, not by any stretch. But I do believe, that this is the core of misunderstood Opie.

I don't know if it's exactly that, or that when they first got on XM it was new and they were excited. But Anthony did change. Early on the racism was kind of Archie Bunker like, and it was all 3 of them. Somewhere between Obama and Trayvon Martin, Ant's part in that got a lot darker. Also early on he talked about being in bed every night by nine, and then somewhere after Melinda that changed. Maybe it was Niccolini.

But when I listen to old segments now, I hear the same things that are irritating about Opie now, he just shut up to let Ant and Jim have space to work.

Opie was honestly at his worst in those days because he still thought the show was his and would chime in OBNOXIOUSLY LOUD and have to be bailed out by Ant after he inevitably drew the conversation to a complete halt. Opie has always been best at, like you said, plugging people better than him.

Tbh, most of the comedians on the show were too big for them at that point. They had careers. Who can blame them for not wanting to wake up at 5 or 6 in the morning and drive through NYC traffic to go on a radio show after they had been up until 2-3 am the night before? Bill Burr is probably the only comedian who stopped coming on due to Ant's racism, but he also had a god damn career. And his wife is hideous. That's besides the point, but it's worth noting.
