Why would a company pay you after firing you for cause? His contract got ripped up and he stopped getting checks as soon as he was fired.

I think that's the case, not because I have any info on Opie's specifics, but just based on my own experiences working in and around the media and entertainment companies, labor law and an informed speculation.
They fired him in early July. Let's assume that his one year contract wasn't iron clad guaranteed. No matter what, they'd have to pay him through that month, per NYS labor laws, and the balance of his vacation time (no matter the cause of termination) which leaves just two or three months tops left on his contract.
If the company tried to get out of paying him out, it would cost them more in legal fees on the good chance that he'd sue, no matter how week his case would be, because that's 100% what his lawyer would do.
