What does this idea of "knowing radio" even mean? It's a completely made up intangible. It's also outdated, like "knowing vaudeville" or "knowing minstrel shows". Most of the successful podcasters have no radio experience, and most old radio guys suck.
I suppose it would mean having a knowledge of many shows withint the medium, knowing about Stern and O&A and others etc. Like how a film critic knows about film
Do you want to appeal to a large audience and make money, or do you want to be an "artist" and pretend what you do is better than what the mainstream guys are doing?
Opie said he was doing both but in fact he was doing neither.
There's a whole spectrum of inbetween there you're not thinking of. Look at Jeff Tweedy of Wilco for example, Wilco and their albums probably don't make a huge amount of money but Jeff Tweedy can do private performances for people who will pay lots to have their favourite artist at their party so he can make a lot of cash.
Opie has been bad for years but the whole subreddit acts like he never did anything funny at all, he had the self awareness to dig up archive audio of old shows for the comedians to make fun of, he brought Spuds Buckley to the show knowing he would be annihilated for it.
I dislike him greatly but I don't understand how this subreddit went from thinking he was okay or bad (remember everyone making fun of /u/opiesucks?) to just completely acting like he never did anything for the show at all, was never funny at any point etc.
It would hurt Opie more to know that people thought he could have contributed and been remembered as a benefit to the show but squandered his chances than if there was this horde of people on here who think he never did anything at all.
Opie and Anthony clearly did something otherwise we wouldn't be here talking about the show, there are clips where Opie clearly contributed, it doesn't mean he wasn't complete shit more recently either, I just don't think you're being fair about it.
Are you honestly saying Opie never brought anything beneficial to the show whatsoever, even his Spuds Buckley tape as a single lone example?
It would hurt Opie more to know that people thought he could have contributed and been remembered as a benefit to the show but squandered his chances than if there was this horde of people on here who think he never did anything at all.
What are you talking about? I don't expect Opie to ever see what I say and couldn't care less. I don't have an anti-Opie agenda, I sincerely think he's shit and got insanely lucky.
What are you talking about? I don't expect Opie to ever see what I say and couldn't care less. I don't have an anti-Opie agenda, I sincerely think he's shit and got insanely lucky.
What is said here can gain traction if it's a meme, one poster wrote 'greggshells' and it caught on, soon enough Opie mentioned the nickname, it's not as if this place has no power
Spuds Buckley is average Jocktober quality.
If opie was shit he wouldn't have brought it in, Spuds Buckley was horrendously humiliating for him but he brought it to the show and deserves credit for that, same for all the old archive footage and audio, he contributed for sure in my opinion. You're just looking back without being realistic because you hate who he is so much now, I hate him too, but at least I recognise he contributed something at one point
I just listened to some Spuds Buckley, it's actually horrible. Half of it is Opie whining and saying about how he's had it so tough in radio. If anything, this is a case study on why he's a piece of shit.

Just because you are posing an argument doesn't make it worthy of response.
Which is why you keep responding?
Your idea that Opie did absolutely nothing to benefit the show over 20 years doesn't make any sense. No matter how annoying you find Opie, he couldn't be carried for such a long period of time. The opinion of him was different here hence why posts like this exist:
Being honest, this subreddit wasn't so massively hateful of Opie 2-3 years ago and it slowly turned around. I hate Opie now too, I find him incredibly annoying and egotistical, I'm just saying he wasn't always bad and he did contribute, you're just being revisionist, you hate him so much you think he never brought anything to the show at all over two decades
Your idea that Opie did absolutely nothing to benefit the show over 20 years doesn't make any sense. No matter how annoying you find Opie, he couldn't be carried for such a long period of time.
Who cares. Go do something useful, Opie. You need to find a new job.
Wilco has sold over a million albums, has won multiple Grammys, is insanely popular with fans and critics, and regularly sells out tours.
On an independent label, sharing those royalties and the advance etc between how many members? All of whom have homes, families, mortgages to pay, they're not exactly swimming in cash like Nicki Minaj dude.
Didn't need to read your "hey guys, come on now" defense of Opie to know you have no idea what you're talking about, hole.
I've repeatedly said I don't like Opie now, I'm just saying there was a time when he wasn't completely terrible but people on here act like he never did anything ever and it's not true
Yeah they started their own independent label, so they get a much bigger slice of a much smaller pie. Most independent bands make a lot more than corporate labels because they control all aspects of the business.
Most independent bands make a lot more from record sales than corporate labels because they control all aspects of the business.
And record sales are at such a low it doesn't really matter, most of their money is made on tour, hence big 3 trying to do 360 deals with big artists to get share of the merch etc.
if all of these human disasters that actually enjoy opie died crashing their cars from laughing at sherrod's unintelligible noises nobody would miss them.
If @OpieShow told them a comet was coming and it was time to make the great transcendence, there's be dozens dead fat guys with chin beards. You have the power, Erock.
There's some cringe monster tweeting to Opie and the Fat Cuban that he is driving 6 hours to meet up with them at some shithole that Cuban guy works. I pity the lonely guy.
The ones who are not paid are the Stalker Pattis of the world. They're not human beings, they're moths. Opie's voice is a light that draws in retards who fall under his spell. It's worked on maybe 200 people in 20 years.
I've never understood how someone could willingly be a lick-spittle, like Johnieroxx there, in the face of any and all reality. Is your life that meaningless that you have to latch on to someone else just to have a purpose? Face it, you're just as bad as a personal assistant to Michael Moore, tasked with getting him endless fried chicken. You have nothing going for you in life, and never will. So instead of being a second-rate sycophant, how about going ahead and throwing that ole rope over a sturdy beam--at least pissing and shitting yourself while turning blue and losing consciousness has some sort of dignity compared to licking some other idiot's ass for props or a living.
What are you talking about? I don't expect Opie to ever see what I say and couldn't care less. I don't have an anti-Opie agenda, I sincerely think he's shit and got insanely lucky.

It's not about people enjoying the radio show.
If 95% of the people who listen to it hate it, but one guy who claims to "know radio" says it's great, then it's a great show.

Entertainers need to make a choice.
Do you want to appeal to a large audience and make money, or do you want to be an "artist" and pretend what you do is better than what the mainstream guys are doing?
Opie said he was doing both but in fact he was doing neither.
His audience was 5-10 retarded truckers.

I hated Opie from the minute I heard him.
He didn't do anything a good board op or producer couldn't do. Sam finding and presenting Jocktober clips outshines anything Opie ever did.
