I'm relatively new to o and a (listening to YouTube videos religiously every day at work, for the last 2 years), so this may have been discussed already.
Everyone seemed to skate around opies unfunny, purposely quietly delivered "lines", and general shitty attitude. They'd either ignore it, give it a predictable fake laugh, and maneuver away from it.
But Patrice seemed to always throw him a bone. Opie would say a line, or reference, or statement that was only barely on topic that should be given a 1 out of 10 response, and Patrice would big it up in a believable way. Or fight for it to not be a bomb at least. It never felt forced.
So I can't tell if that was Patrice having the instinct to keep the funny in the room, or if it was an attempt to keep getting invited back, or maybe... MAYBE Patrice seeing and respecting the stuff that opie did that was undervalued, and trying to get him a little visible credit with listeners.
I'm thinking of a few moments were opie threw out some obscure black knowledge and Patrice interrupted the conversation everyone else was having with a big "wait a minute, wait a minute. Opie! " then laughing and explaining the reference. Things like that or the 2 story McDonald's reference.
What do y'all think?

As much as people like to wish Patrice secretly hated Opie, Patrice respected him. This is a guy who would tell producers to go fuck themselves yet he appeared on Opie's show countless times and some of those times it was just Opie and Patrice.

Patrice was all about the funny. No question about that. Yeah, I think he wanted to keep the momentum of funny rolling and knew Opie was a hole and would try and bail him out. But I also think Patrice thought Opie was kind of a Tard and felt sorry for him, and would let his titty ass bullshit slide.
