When I was a kid, the guy at the local movie store showed me some of his receipts. He was paying over $100 in 1996 for a VHS of a popular movie because they weren't just buying the tape, they were buying a rental license. It's the biggest reason Blockbuster was able to completely destroy the rental market. They negotiated huge contracts for licenses and got everything at a fraction of the cost. They were probably paying 1/3 of the cost of the little guys, plus they had 10x the square footage in their stores, it was impossible to compete
