I just watched it tonight. Not as great as his past specials but still pretty funny, solid, and very professional. Goddamn can that man command an audience.
It's a combination of ridiculously high expectations and hyper critical-ism, born from the narcissism of millennials and the comedians themselves, and the social media climate, in which creating, considering or just laughing at genuine work is secondary to tearing it apart to score points with peers. (You could also frame it as the self-devouring of post-modernism).
When the great/classic comedy hours came out in the last few decades, starting with Pryor, they weren't seen or judged as high art, but as great pieces of entertainment, with social commentary but primarily funny stuff on tv or on record/cd. They've since been lionized to Shakespearean levels, unfairly, so every new comedy special is expected to do impossible things and the simple pleasure and humor is drained from them in the scrutiny.
I liked the new Chappelle specials, and people can disagree about taste and humor, but immediately it was the "cool" thing to shit on them, vaguely, in certain circles. Same with this Louis one, I liked it and laughed, that's all. It's not curing cancer or revealing the deep secrets of humanity, but when I told a friend of mine I liked it he said "oh god, ugh, it was so fucking horrible, who does he think he is...how could you support him, he's a libcuck etc" like he only saw it through this silly narcissistic lens.
Ha, yeah I guess I was a bit long winded there. I had two or three basic points to express, and used a few sentences for each. My bad for using too many words.
You're right about the post modernism thing but conversely i dont want to watch someone do an hour's worth of anti Trump propaganda. I hope it isn't that.
The Chappelle shit really bugs me. Not to brag, but I'm a member of the LGBTQ+ community. In fact, I'm one of those new fangled transgenders. And I'm also a lesbian. I laughed my ass off at Daves. I don't necessarily agree with his point but he is still very funny. I also laughed at Bill Burr's joke about trans women in MMA.
Honestly, I think the problem is that liberal white cis gender straight FAGGOTS take comedy too seriously. They're just jokes nigga.
The Chappelle jokes were more nuanced than the faggoty Guardian/blog criticisms took into account. (Besides that they were jokes).
If anything, he was joking about how regular black folk look at how quickly your community has made strides societally, and how the black community is confused by it. Funny, real stuff. Words, out of context, shouldn't offend. Let's keep all the words and ideas on the table, and discuss them openly, not ban or regulate thoughts.
His abortion bit was good, because he hit on a feeling many people have--yeah, it's kind of killing babies, but okay, you can kill people if they are inside you.
It was pretty good. There were about 20 minutes of it that he needed to tighten up. But the rest was really funny. And he's a weirdo, so even when he's not that funny, you still get his weirdness stuck in your head. The suit served him well too.
"I watched this movie called Magic Mike and almost got a hard dick boner. I might still experiment with being gay, which I discussed in my 2007 special. Also my daughter is a cunt."
His last two specials where different from all the others. He does more character work now, where before it was observational humor. He would explain an issue really well, and make it funny. His last two where good, but i prefer the ones before.
One of my least favorite specials he's done. Dunno if I got a good laugh once. I just don't like the direction his comedy is going. That's the best way I can describe it.
Netflix just released the 3 funniest stand up specials in years within a few weeks and paid Dave 60 million, and Louis probably 12 million.
They're stealing the old HBO model. Get the best comics, produce mediocre edgy tv series and give out access to 1 year old blockbuster movies like The Big Short, etc.
I saw the same hour live a couple of months ago and I felt he did better during the live show but that could be because it was my first time hearing it.

Seems like you're reviewing the Nuremberg rallies.

I'm surprised to see these good reviews because I've seen nothing but bad ones up to this point

Thank you Patrick Bateman. Only thing missing from your dissertation was a ""Hey Paul" ending.

It's not, in fact I don't even know if Trump comes up for more than a few lines if that.

I'd want to see somebody do unusual and different Trump material in the vein of papa franku. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6w3EbmeD9UY

Louie kind of seems like performing comedy is his least favorite thing on earth. It took balls to open with abortion, though.

The home invasion bit was kind of amazing even though it was a throw away line.

He is an artist now. Stand up is so beneath him.

I loved it. I was smilling the entire time. I also loved Dave Chapelles specials too, even though some of my fellow liberals didnt.
n/a truthie 2017-04-08
Man, that was legitimately funny. Which is amazing in the age of absolutely shit comedy.
