I don't think Chappelle or CK stepped on anybody to make it. But they both wanted to be famous (although Chappelle quickly regretted it) and Attell never tried to be the #1 guy in comedy. At the peak of his fame with Insomniac he was touring with comics as popular or more popular than he was (Lewis Black and Mitch Hedberg on one and had Dane Cook co-headline on another) while most people would have picked an unknown young opener to make it a showcase for themselves.
He sucks at marketing himself. He always poor mouths himself and he's made terrible career choices. Dave's Old Porn? Fun show but that kind of choice limits your marketability. Maybe he doesn't care, but sometimes it seems like he does care. He's funnier than all of them though.
I've never seen him live, but I don't think his standup is that great. Judging by his last special he's right where he should be. I'd guess he's better live in a small club.
Stern asked him this once and his response was that he solely focused on writing good jokes. He never tried to push any kind of agenda like Big Amy or took a serious stance on anything in his act.
