I miss this as a "bridge too far" device in movies. Michael Douglas's daughter in Traffic is another great example. Both movies came out around the same time, when it was still permissible. The wayward girl characters of today are never going to fully bottom out, and fully signify to the audience that they need intervention, if they don't end up getting ravaged by Superfly. Nowadays, even if a black guy was right for a lowlife part, and really wanted it, they would recast him on the day of shooting with a fat white grip. If Thirteen were made today, the girl would hit rock bottom by assaulting a virtuous man of color while high on drugs.
