As somebody that's lived in southern California his entire life, I can't defend LA comedy. It just sucks. The comedy scene here is crap too. As far as seeing good comedy you have to wait for a decent act to come through. Might as well be Ohio.
That's so untrue. The Comedy Store is the best comedy club in the world. Anything goes there. 90% of the comedians on the bill on any given night are nationally headlining acts who aren't from LA, they're bitter east coast guys. The crowds are a total mixed bag, the majority of which are tourists from all over. So many comics in there most of the week are brutal and make tons of minority/women/etc jokes and most people go along with it pretty good. (Rick Ingraham, Joey Diaz, Argus Hamilton) I hate the Roast Battle with a passion, but the racist jokes that go on up there are fucking brutal and usually really funny, I have to give them credit for that much.
The problem is "alt rooms" like Nerdmelt and the Improv comedy scene/UCB, where it's all safe space ultra liberal white man hating bullshit, and those get a lot more attention because they're the hipper rooms these days. To say "the whole city and whole scene sucks" is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. ("I'll catch im!" - Uncle Paul)
Oh I do not have a problem with the clubs here or in LA (or SF for that matter). What I am saying is the "resident" talent here on the west seems less than what you'd find in NY, Boston, NJ, etc. I was just saying that as far as getting good comedians, it is almost as infrequent as if I were to live in a smaller market.
