I really don't think you understand what sort of change was going on at the time. Gavin's explained it before and it mirrors a lot of my own experience dealing with start-ups and small businesses. His role as the content director (or whatever they called it) was being pared down and the Sales department (under Shane, the sales director) was becoming the main focus. If you're a founder you can't just hang on and get a cheque, you need to be perfectly aligned when it comes to a mission goal, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a long time coming.

They offered him money to leave, you can't say no to that. Either he takes the money or they find some other way to either push him our or make him quit. Founders fuck each other over every day, especially when real money is involved and while I don't know the entire story of how they started I would think they didn't have the most legally binding contracts between each other, either.

You seem to be hung up on this being about emotions but the company wasn't dealing in health insurance or making levers. The entire entity of Vice is personality and political beliefs. There would be no way to hide that or make it work if you're supposed to be the one running the content. If you hate gay people, you won't last that long being the creative director of an LGBT magazine. You don't need to be a hysterical woman for that relationship to fail.

You don't have to get defensive. Even preemptively anticipating it, considering that back in 2005 Vice was on the rise in terms of online content, or at the very least they were on the cusp of the internet boom (VBS.tv). With all of that in motion; getting in the way of that because you all of a sudden hate gays (his naivety stems from diving right in to ONE ideal, so when he became "born again", he felt compelled to argue against them) isn't smart for business. Especially your own. If he was crafty enough, he could've navigated his personal beliefs to harbor them away from Vice's direction. I'm almost POSITIVE Shane and Suroosh share or overlap with his views in some way, and they were able to manage it enough to pull off the direction they're heading now while retaining their venture capital investors. Gavin could've joined them, but he opted to be Gavin. Again; that ensures that you're choosing your own personal convictions over profit, so you don't have to "sell out", but subsequently its also screwing up your shot at being plugged into a billion-dollar pipeline. And his actions POST VICE has pretty much confirmed that. Look at what happened with him and Rooster Media, or whatever that faggot name for the company was. He's a naive maniac, and where he's at now has everything to do with his own personal choices, instead of straightening up and being, at the very least, craftier with his personal politics in business.

I work in Real Estate; there's a healthy amount of conforming that a sales rep has to do with the client JUST TO CLOSE THE DEAL. Its a bit easier these days with the state of consumerism ("shut up and take my money"), but you still have to resist the urge to kill the family you're selling a house to, if you hate them for whatever reason on a personal level. If one can figure out a way to suppress that and appeal to the family in order to close the deal, than one can figure out a way to adapt and navigate in a company's changing direction, even if you're in charge of its content. There's a way to do both WITHOUT completely conforming and losing yourself in the mix. To your credit; it doesn't mean they wouldn't try to kick him out and/or ask him to leave EVENTUALLY, but at least he'd be leaving with more money, and (hopefully) without the stigma he's put on himself. The latter is probably wishful thinking...
