It's really funny how awful he is. After a few minutes of Jim and Anthony throwing out great lines, Opie reads a line from instant feedback that was basically adding nothing ("footloose"). At least he gave credit.
Listening to old clips, it makes me think: it must have been terribly frustrating and embarrassing for him to just sit there while the whole room is laughing at Jim and Ant, while he just continues to have absolutely nothing to contribute. Day after day, year after year.
And that would be why, once or twice per month, someone would call in and call Opie out, and then everyone in studio had to spend ten minutes explaining how important Opie was to the show. And why he always had to repeat out and repeat every line he ever got a sincere chuckle from.
But he didn't even do that right. There were a lot of times when Opie would laugh but it was so transparent and clear that he didn't actually get what was funny. It would be either an over the top "HAR HAR" laugh or some monotone bored laugh where you could clearly tell that he was doing it just because everyone else was.
every laugh Jim and Ant produced was leverage Opie could've used to extract more $ from his employer. millions of dollars in compensation should be enough to quell any childish attention seeking 'i wanna be funny too' compulsions
Opie would do that a lot. If Ant and Jim were killing with a bit and Opie had nothing to add (when does he add anything anyway), he would try to run it into the ground or move on.
I'll just throw my random Opie-hate tidbit here: Ant and Jimmy were destroying (fat) Terry Clifford with great lines and Opie slams on the brake and reads a listener's paltalk line saying "of course she's on a country station, because she could never be on >LITE< FM!!!!!!!!" Everyone politely chuckles as they carefully navigate the shellfield holding their paycheck.
Was just listening to this today. I don't get why he did the laugh track over people who were actually laughing. And his elevator to heaven song joke towards the end was just awful. And this dummy tries to say that it was too wordy after he bombed, dummy all the songs they were parodying were wordy, it's just yours was not funny and didn't make sense compared to what ant and Jim were saying. Fuck I hate opie
Think about it. If you're some kind of A-list celebrity, obviously you won't be going around reading every comment on the internet about you. But I'd bet even Brad Pitt would lurk a subreddit that was specifically dedicated to him. Just because somebody's rich and famous, doesn't mean they never get bored and wonder Hmm, what is the internet saying about me now? Even if they know it will be relentlessly cruel, people can't resist wanting to know what others think. Opie obviously isn't that famous, so of course he has time to lurk here. So does Ant, Jim (confirmed), Dr. Steve (confirmed), and probably Brother Joe.
Honestly, it's kind of sad when you think about it. Imagine seeing nothing but negativity about yourself in a place that is dedicated to a radio show you created and 1/2 hosted for two decades.
The best part about Opie's shittiness is that occasionally you hear Ant or Jim exhaling softly and hatefully trying to keep their patience cause it's not worth it to start an argument over.
It's like a parent grinning and bearing his toddler screaming in a crowded supermarket
Especially when its movie, music, or historical references being vollied. Not only is he unable to join in, he cant even follow along and enjoy it. They reference movies all the time that I havent seen but I still get the context and laugh. Hes just a socially awkward idiot.
Then after the laugh track, he's silent for a good 6 minutes while Jimmy and Ant have me in tears......he finally decides to awkwardly throw in a song, and bit over.

Yes but I don't think he'd draw as much hate if he just left it at the Har Hars instead of injecting himself into the middle of the fun.

Listener number 3 here. Small world.

There's an infuriating clip of Patrice and Ant doing Platoon references. They were both cracking up and Opie goes to the phones, right in the middle.

Notice he has absolutely no jokes in this segment (excluding the shit he reads from instant feedback).
What is it you'd say you do here?

ME: I was never supposed to be the funniest guy in the room.

I hope opie reads this board and realizes how he fucked up the show and why people hate him. Not likely, though.

The Newfie is still making videos, only now they're all just him drunkenly ranting about the Fukushima nuclear accident and shouting conspiracy theories and awfully researched "science" facts. Watch the awesomeness here.

How'd he get into Ants basement?

listening back to old clips, my favorite moments are whenever opie fake laughs because he doesn't get the joke. it happens a lot.
