Because lovable dummies are great. Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin, Michael Scott, Kelso, Joey Tribbiani, etc etc. You enjoy them as characters but also laugh because they don't know things that you know.

Vos has had a rather tough life - divorce, watching his peers become rich and famous while he languishes in mediocrity, constant ridicule, insecurity, drug abuse, losing to Dat Phan on Last Comic Standing, constantly being reminded that his acting skills are so fucking bad that he'll never be able to handle a project like Louie or Trainwreck. His (albeit hot) wife openly shows disgust at the fact that she had to settle for him. All sorts of Jewish slurs thrown at him despite never getting to take advantage of this Jewish Privilege that stand-up comedians apparently have.

Add to that, he provides entertaining radio. He plays along and does the scene with Chazz knowing he'll be mocked. Brings a purse into studio and calls it a men's carry-on. Tells stories about how he used to seduce his gay dealer for more drugs. Plays along at the "Vos names celebrities" bit and others meant to mock him.

Compare that to Opie, who doesn't want to be mocked. Doesn't want to made to look ridiculous. Doesn't want to bring fights with his wife to the air. Doesn't want to participate in bits where he's the butt of the joke. Vos is game for all that, but he's not a pussy either: you shit on him, he'll shit right back on you. Yeah sure, there are a lot of bombs, but you appreciate the hits that much more. And the bombs are still entertaining, because (especially in the old days) Ant, Jimmy, and any comics in studio would just fucking pounce on him every time and piss him off more. That's why Vos is held in such high regard.

Vos is very funny. I love the energy Vos brings. Wherever he goes he turns it into an uncomfortable ball busting room. Which I like.
