California is what won her the popular vote. But that state was never gonna go to him. Los Angeles county makes up most of their votes anyways so it's no surprise really. It's not really a good gauge that she's the more popular candidate when one state can skew it like that.

He even tried to offer the VP spot to Kasich where he promised Kasich would be the "most powerful" VP of all time and would control Domestic and Foreign policy. Trump wants to be the "brand" of America. He definitely doesn't want to govern. He wants the job if he can run America like he runs his business: Boards and Directors and managers do everything and he's the name slapped on the top. Now he's just gonna surround himself with people that know what they are doing (hopefully) and hopefully it won't be a bunch of neocon republican party hacks.
And he didn't really have much to lose... Once he got in and started getting support he already won. If he message wasn't being received well and it looked like he was going to hurt his brand he would have just dropped out and said "America needs me more as a job creator and businessman than as a President. Government doesn't do anything. I do more for this country in the private sector!" And his supporters would have cheered at how great he was for stepping down.
I think he wants the title of President but he doesn't want to govern. If he can't even take the time to read his own god damn website he clearly doesn't want to do the work. He just wants to be the name of the country. How is that hard to understand? He won because people voted for him. Campaigning was easy for him. He got to go from state to state listening to people cheering and he never once had people asking him "Ok.. so how are you going to do that exactly?" His answer was always "well it's a secret plan to defeat ISIS so I'm not telling but trust me I'm smarter than the generals." and voters were fine with that. OK.. Trump is smarter than generals and he has secret plans for everything. Fair enough. Elect him.

Well there is some truth to the idea that he doesn't actually want to be President. When Eric Trump called Kasich to offer him the VP slot he told him that Kasich would be the most powerful VP ever to hold office because Trump would let him coordinate domestic and foreign policy affairs and basically he, himself, would just be a figurehead.. sort of like the Ronald McDonald while the CEO is doing the work. If he was serious he would have probably tried to learn his policies. He literally didn't even know his own policies. He constantly fucked up trying to explain the policies that were on his website. Several times he said he was doing shit that was the exact opposite of what his website said and his surrogates had to go on the news the next day and correct it for him. He didn't prepare for anything. He was just good at campaigning and saying he's going to make America great and that was good enough for a lot of people. People tend to vote based on name recognition and he had 100% name recognition and he struck a nationalist chord at a time when that's the note a lot of people wanted to hear.
He even tried to offer the VP spot to Kasich where he promised Kasich would be the "most powerful" VP of all time and would control Domestic and Foreign policy. Trump wants to be the "brand" of America. He definitely doesn't want to govern. He wants the job if he can run America like he runs his business: Boards and Directors and managers do everything and he's the name slapped on the top. Now he's just gonna surround himself with people that know what they are doing (hopefully) and hopefully it won't be a bunch of neocon republican party hacks.
And he didn't really have much to lose... Once he got in and started getting support he already won. If he message wasn't being received well and it looked like he was going to hurt his brand he would have just dropped out and said "America needs me more as a job creator and businessman than as a President. Government doesn't do anything. I do more for this country in the private sector!" And his supporters would have cheered at how great he was for stepping down.

Too many are misusing that term/idea. People do vote for their rational self-interest. And their interests include their "feels". It's false and a strawman to claim economists (or specifically public choice theorists) use that term otherwise.
Humans are emotional, tribal creatures. Economics and evolutionary psychology (among other fields) can and do articulate politics quite well. It's just people ignore it. They cling to those feels (including those who claim to support science) and ignore the fact that sometimes the system itself... the rules... create, or more specifically said, incentive... undesirable outcomes.
Instead of spending a day looking into public choice theory to understand why policy X doesn't pan out or why people are disengaged. Why we have only two parties. Etc. etc.... we get "You have to vote!" "Your vote matters!" blah blah blah. Math says otherwise.
Don't blame the players... blame the game.
