I could be just a young guy analyzing it wrong, but I think it's pretty intentional in making you feel like that. Look up "zipper lips" by Neil Hamburger - the idea is the same, it's anti-comedy, it's the idea that someone put effort into doing something so not funny trying to be funny that it's funny.
