That seems to be the unanimous story I've seen from a few... sad really. Look into Harry's eyes on that show, he is drugged out of his mind, and might even be drinking... The guy is clearly in trouble and needs some friends who care right now. Not a couple of opportunists like the Stangel Brothers, trying to make a buck. They conned and scammed Letterman for so many years, until they were found out and tossed. Remember when they admitted it to Opie, master interviewer, that they were basically feeding Letterman lines they stole, and they started drugging him and egging on his sexual behavior with interns. In fact, they insisted and said it made the job more fun, for them.
Pete became my new favorite radio hero when he demolished these two idiots on the air. His timing and ability to relentlessly shit all over them and their stupid project was just insane.
And when one of them walked out and the other one just kinda followed him sadly was the icing on the cake.
EDIT: It's too bad he got decapitated.
