You're not wrong, in fact you're all kinds of right. However, I don't agree that any amount of nuance, finesse, or rationality wouldn't have still resulted in a howling mob calling for his head. These issues are sacred cows now, and the facts don't even matter anymore. It's "you're either with us, or against us” these days.
The same could be said for both sides, just look at this sub gets riled up on any kind of topic like this. Reason and logic go out the window, and suddenly the cows get caught up in making some fool's life miserable and bringing up every distinguishable flaw.
