What are your favourite poets, gang?

Personally I like to take a l'il peak at the Shakespeare every now and then, just a taste. The sonnets here and there, I like the deep cuts like Sonnet 60. I've also been getting back into John Donne, and I know Colin Quinn loves WB Yeats. He's a bit too modern for me. PERIOD. I'm trying to memorise a new poem every week. I tried to get into Samuel Johnson but he's too much of a hater.

Shakespeare, Donne, Yeats, Johnson

Top pleb.

STOP IT.

I honestly don't get poetry, I like the odd metaphorical line (Shakespeare for example) but on the whole I find it boring. I don't appreciate symbolic references that point to other works of art so much either, and classic poetry is full of that. To appreciate it you have to know all that.

War poetry can be pretty decent, pretty accessible. Daffodils can fuck right off.

I'm from 20th Century New Jersey, so my favorite is William Carlos Williams, especially his epic 'Paterson'. There are other great American poets from NJ too, my other favorites are Stephen Crane (the black riders/war is kind) and Walt Whitman

thanks fam

Charles Simic and W.S. Merwin are fantastic. The story of Merwin getting assaulted by Buddhist hippies under the instruction of a fanatic guru is pretty fascinating: http://www.litkicks.com/MerwinNaropa

Sista Soulja or any slam poetry

She's just terrific, folks.

James Cleveland cause I love it when Hillary panders to niggers

I don't feel no ways tired...

Poems are gay

So?

I recently got into Stephen Dobyns after reading a Stephen King book that mentioned him. Check out his poem "Cemetery Nights", good stuff.

Not my poem, but for better men than I (Valhalla):

Halfway down the trail to Hell in a shady meadow green, are the Souls of all dead troopers camped near a good old-fashion canteen, and this eternal resting place is known as Fiddlers' Green.

Marching past, straight through to Hell, the Infantry are seen, accompanied by the Engineers, Artillery and Marine, for none but the shades of Cavalrymen dismount at Fiddlers' Green.

Though some go curving down the trail to seek a warmer scene, no trooper ever gets to Hell ere he's emptied his canteen and so rides back to drink again with friends at Fiddlers' Green.

And so when man and horse go down beneath a saber keen, or in a roaring charge fierce melee you stop a bullet clean, and the hostiles come to get your scalp, just empty your canteen and put your pistol to your head and go to Fiddlers' Green.

thanks fam it's quite nice.
