Joe says they agreed that if either of them became successful, they would use their wealth to help out the family.
When they were latchkey kids being raised by a single mother who spent her nights waiting tables in a go-go bar, this probably meant "Help with the bills and keep a roof over mom's head".
Joe took it to mean "Never get a real job and live off an allowance from my younger brother until I'm dead."
