Bo Burnham

I didn't go to a show or see him in person. I don't leave my house.

I wanna see some opinions on him from people who don't ballwash creativity and weirdness.

I had to look up his specials names cause i don't want my highly revered internet name to endorse something awful, but i remember seeing his "what." special of 2013 and not thinking it was terrible. It was different, definitely shouldn't be considered stand-up and i can't imagine even being able to do this stuff at small venues but i literally know nothing of him so maybe he does.

For those who've never seen his stuff it was more of an act, very music-y and a lot of use of pre-recorded sound things that play into his act and that he interacts with. I think it wasn't bad, it was entertaining as far as i remember, maybe it's alot easier to not hate a person when you know nothing about them.

Anyways i saw his latest one on netflix with my older brother who likes his stuff. To me it was the same kinda thing, different and kinda interesting, not as much prerecorded interactions but it was a weird act that somehow flowed decently i think.

Really i wanted to see the opinions of people here cause let's be honest, we know a good bit about comedian type shit and we're honest about what we think. Also he's acclaimed by young girls, which are people who are the opposite of this sub and comedy, so i wanna hear what some harder comedy critics think of him. And from first glance and listen i'd assume most people here wouldn't like him. He's weirdly tall with the awkward crouched stance that people who are uncomfortably tall do, and he's got a pretty faggy voice that could get annoying if you pay attention to it too hard like primetime sam roberts. But as far as i can tell he's alright

So, where we at with the Bo Burnham?

Honestly he writes some seriously funny shit but I never defend music acts when people trash them. Calling him a faggot is pretty fair.

He has an enormous ego thinly hidden behind some mediocre self depreciation. I also bet he fondles tween fans. He has made me laugh but I doubt he'll ever be truly funny because he found success too early. I also get the impression a lot of his humor is "laugh if you agree with my political views." which is off putting.

Overall he's a faggot and I hope he gets raped.

that last sentence should be the new name of this sub.

he's pretty good at what he does. i wouldn't call it stand-up comedy either. it's some kind of parody musical with some talking during the interludes.

he does come off as a gay man though.

He is like a cliche reddit user doing stand up. I also listened to him on Pete Holmes' podcast and he had this super douchey self-important policy where he wont tell people if he's gay or straight because it shouldnt matter because they should both be seen equally. Huge faggot.

this could very well be a reason i enjoyed his two things, because i don't have anything to despise him for.

he also does awful shit like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YcWakLcb3A

Ive seen parts of his specials and Im sure I liked a bit or two, but overall he's too much of a faggot.

car crash

Pretty good description. I don't think he would have gone over as well 10, 20, or 50 years ago. Very "internet-ish" style. Jumps around a lot, and mixes format and style. Its like the frontpage of reddit or youtube. very much geared to the short attention span of millennials and the need for a constant refesh, where things are broken down into smaller segments. Its getting harder to get a younger audience to sit at a stand-up show for 45mins to an hour of the same guy doing the same thing (standing there telling jokes) and he built his act around that.

I will not listen to his 1 hour special, but from the bits I've heard his character is too soft, he is very "performative" and not very natural, he doesn't use a lot of tendentious humor that the people here enjoy. There is something professional about his showmanship but not enough to carry me through.

You're right but he actually makes jokes about it and acknowledges it in a funny way

I was wondering when his name would be brought up here. Can't say I like him. Also wouldn't call what he does Stand Up.

Sadly this is what "youtube famous" is. Awkward, meme-y, weird for the sake of being weird, and material for an ADD audience. Feels gearded for a preteen audience.

It's unfair to compare Burnham who is more talented and clearly works harder than any of the standups we admire here to some faggy youtube tween. I know thats where he blew up but the dude is undeniably talented

I agree. And as someone with ADD I appreciate how compact his shows are; he doesn't just stand there and milk the same joke, but constantly changes things up and forces you to pay attention.

He has grown enormously as a comedian, and performer, since he first started out on YouTube.

I like him. He's got his own thing going, stays in his own lane, seems like he's a sjw but doesn't let it overpower his shows. Some really funny parts, and it's definitely unique and creative. He's more talented than literally 100% of these standup comic windbags and his songs are actually really funny. It's more of a one man show then stand up comedy....I'm a fan

Agreed, it's not traditional stand up but he's really funny and good at what he does. Doesn't try to be like every other comedian. I would say it's more of a one man show myself but it's definitely funnier than most of the specials I've seen on Netflix.

seems like he's a sjw

Not sure where everyone gets this when they post about him here, one bit alone had a Nazi joke and a pedophilia joke, and not in the shitty cheap way that Jim does them. They are crafted in a way where it actually lulls you in and then surprises the audience so they have to laugh (and not just groan) and keeps it moving so that he can set it up again, etc. I hate 99% of musical "comedy" but people here are smashing him when he has a sick work ethic to make the jokes and stage show work at that pace. He's worked harder on those specials than Jim has worked on his entire career of material.

I don't know if you read my comments but I 100% agree with you and was his biggest supporter in this thread till you came along....but I also heard his Maron interview and he's totally got some pretentious sjw-ness about him and you also saw it creep into his latest special....I don't care though cause funny is funny and talent is talent and he's got more of both than all the windbag comics we watch

Ohh yeah, I haven't heard the Maron, and I keep meaning to watch his new special. The thing is, he's in his 20's right? That's about the age to act that way in the current climate, sucks to hear that though.

" people who don't ballwash creativity"

yeah ,I love hearing from those who support the uncreative. More boring and bland shit please.

this might've been unclear, but "ballwash" was meant as a negative word, like a type of overly annoying support.

All good comedy is creative but that doesn't mean i wanna hear someone gargle balls about how great someone is because they're so different.

Sure, but can we both agree that the sound of someone actually gargling balls would probably be pretty funny?

probably? definitely, and it kinda tickles

I prefer Bo Diddley

self-important faggot with a massive ego. I like to laugh at pretty much anything, but he has this aura of faggotry that I can't stand.

I gotta throw in with everyone else in saying that he's made me laugh pretty good but seems like a faggot. He seemed pretty cool from his WTF interview and Green Room appearance, though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwXAmpMv32Y for that Green Room episode. I really actually liked that show; it was like Tough Crowd only they only had one episode with Colin Quinn as opposed to all of them. :(

My little brother liked his special so he showed it to me. I wanted to fake liking it, to spare my teenage brother a bit of humiliation, but it was so awful I couldn't hide my look of abject shame and disappointment. Never heard that queer's name before or since that incident, until now

I saw him live a few months ago in my hometown when he was on tour because my friend really liked him and her birthday was a week before the performance. I paid $80 for 2 tickets and got blown so I'm not too upset.

Oh, it was okay, not really my type of comedy though.

well i wouldn't expect a blowjob to be comedic but thanks for your thoughts on it

As much as I hate to admit it, hes made me laugh pretty hard.

was he tickling you while he fucked your ass you faggot!!

no but this is a safe space, i just wanted opinions

what. (Bo Burnham FULL SHOW HD) 1 - I wouldn't call that comedy at all, more like a one man variety show that may be funny at times to certain people. There's a book on my head!
