STOP CALLING ME THAT! STOP IT! I'M NOT A PHILISTINE OR A PLEB AND IF YOU KEEP SAYING THAT IT'LL HUMILIATE ME IN FRONT OF THIS ENTIRE SUBREDDIT SO STOP SAYING THAT! IT'S NOT TRUE!
I don't know about you guys, but it seems like OP is trying to very subtly mock us for being uncultured buffoons. By asking us about Homer's Iliad he is only highlighting that beyond Beowulf and Chaucer we know nothing. Sure, a few of us have a passing knowledge of ancient sumerian texts, but okay you got us - the Iliad is our weak spot.
He mocks us now, but when he wants to know in which show did they do the Intern Gay-off one of us will know exactly which one without even having to look it up. He won't feel so superior then.
This is prose you fucking moron. Holy shit fucking kill yourself, you don't even know the difference between dactylic hexameter and prose, fucking illiterate fucking retard. Take a long bronze spear and stab it into your throat as fast as you can, useless moron. Take the blade and stab it out the other side of your head right underneath your brainstem. Crack your skull and teeth when you do so, so your eyes bubble up with blood, the blood pours down the hole in your throat, and blood, broken teeth and bone spews out of your mouth like a drunk's vomit.
Prose translations are inaccurate enough, verse is basically reading a different book entirely. If you're that insistent on hearing the poetic style, learn ancient Greek. If you're a reasonable person, I like Lattimore's prose translation. He uses hexameter and tries to emulate the phonetics as well.
Why should I learn ancient greek? I'd rather wait for that greek homo to learn English. His loss he doesn't get to read Shakespeare HAHAHA YOU DEAD ATHENIAN FAGGOT HAHAHA
I was going to tell you to sit in your running car with the garage door down until you feel nice and sleepy for this post...but I agree that D&D are as big of hack fucks as Opie.
It really does take balls to ruin The Iliad, Wolverine, and then A Song Of Ice And Fire. This fucking guy has ruined three generations of epics with these shit scripts.
(Taking you seriously, pre peckahs) I recommend Nobel winner Derek Walcott's Omeros, as a modern (1990) epic poem loosely based on Homer's Iliad. It's tremendous, a 20th Century classic, and there's probably an audio version available.
sniff my new ting is listening to books. I think the best book I've ever read was "Girl On The Train," it's a VURRY good book. Probably the best book any of us will ever listen to. PERIOD.
I thought for the most part it remains true to the original Greek text with the exception of "The deception of Zeus." Liberties were clearly taken with that section of epic.

I'll check it out, but meanwhile I think I'll try Rodney Merrill's translation of the Iliad.
