I get what you're saying, but funding a presidential campaign ran a nigga $800 million in 2012 so it'll probably be well over a billion for whoever wins in 2016. Trump doesn't have his entire net worth available to him in cash and a billion dollar bill is hard for any single dude to pick up. If he's worried that private donations won't amount to much he's probably the only candidate who would have the ability to actually accept public funding and still win. McCain took the public funding option (which amounted to about $350 million in 2008) and obama wiped him out to the tune of $600-700 million in private donations. Apparently the account that would fund any public candidates is sitting on almost $3 billion right now because a lot of people still check the box on their tax form to contribute but no realistic presidential candidate would ever accept public funding again after seeing how Wall st. can easily out-fund them (see: obama). But Trump could take the (probably) $500 million from the government and then personally top off however much he needs to match his opponent. Trump is one of very few people could actually do that today, and it would be a much cheaper blow to his checkbook if he thinks that his supporters won't be able to cough upmorethan ~$500 million. But if he chooses to decline the govt's cash and during the campaign donations dry up, then he's stuck holding the bag. Who knows though, he could potentially raise a billion or more by not taking the public option, they don't call him a demagogue for nothing.
