He was over-emotional (still is to a lesser degree) and got the AA bible at an impressionable age and emotional state. Over the years hes probably questioned his addictability but then his emotional side bolstered AA rhetoric overcompensated.

"I shouldnt question my addiction... thats the addiction talking! Wheres my sponsor's number?"

P.s. Dont underestimate the power of emotionally motivated opinions with Jimmy. CASE AND POINT--- Black Sabbath. He was young, impressionable, gay etc and connected with them. Then he goes to AA.
