It's ironic that he can get that kind of reaction out of anyone. I was thinking about what his deal was earlier and figured out there's a specific reason why he doesn't even try to be funny, let alone succeed. To be funny you need to be mean, and this is a guy New Yorkers are going to be prejudiced against from the start. I think he's built his entire personality around avoiding anything controversial, including anything mean. Like a bartender has a rule to never touch on politics or religion, he avoids most things that have any substance to them because NYers don't want to hear the opinions of a good ol' southern boaah.
End result is he's just one big good-natured vacuum of banality. Perfect for the Opie Show.
