I sent your findings to my colleague who edits the Journal of Domestic Violence. She believes these alterations were similar to tattoos, and the idea was to present a clearer target for their fists, which are roughly rectangular in shape. Since they exhibited a recessive trait known as pronounced spatial dysplasia, they were prone to aiming for the wrong area, reducing efficiency and accuracy. These tattoos allowed them to overcome their maladaption.

Well we have many separate, but converging lines of evidence showing this to be the case. Probably the most conspicuous piece of evidence though was that the painting smelled of cocoa butter.
