It's hard to imagine now, but they were absolute hot fire in NYC when they got here. When they came to WNEW there was a definite buzz, and they were easily the most popular non-Stern show in the market. They had the same demographic and a great time slot in mid afternoon/drive time.
It sucked that Howard was such a bitch about them being "imposters" and "ripping him off" because they worked for the same company, yet different stations. If Infinity put them on the same station with Stern in the morning and O&A in the evening, nothing would have been able to touch it.
That's why after their initial contract that brought them to NYC, they were given a $30 million dollar long term deal with WNEW and built the station around them.
WWF was massive at this time with Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock, and had their own cafe in Times Square. There probably wasn't a bigger "get" for Vince and the WWE than to put Opie & Anthony on the pre-game show.
So this is the Rocky 5 era for them then. Opie now only has his name and a pair of tits and Ant is fighting on the streets for the love of a young child.
It really was. The show back then was a lot more of a party atmosphere (or in Opie vernacular, "a hang") than the interview show it became in the mornings.
Celebrity guests were few and far between outside of comedians and the occasional wrestler.
Although I think the natural evolution was to move to mornings. I don't think Ant's liver could take being at a job where he could drink on the air the entire time.
It really was a great show back then. So many times something was happening and you reached your destination, but you sat in your car until there was a break because you didn't want to miss something.
WYSP in Philly had it perfect. Stern in the mornings. Don and Mike Mid-day (yeah, most of us hated Don and Mike but it was a decent Mid-day filler) and Opie and Anthony in afternoon drive.
I get that, but I grew up in one of their major markets and enjoyed listening to them, but still never thought they were huge. I guess in terms of what you would call a celebrity nowadays (youtube stars) though, he's right.
PS Your typing style must hurt your pinky as much as it does my brain.
um excuse me guys, but i didnt know some bullshit xfl gig was the same was being the captain of a ship on a very successful radio show. Opie knows when to lay back and let his talent handle the work. He's a leader of men.
Stephanie McMahon was their sidekick who interviewed the crowd during games. Once a fan was wearing devil horns and she asked him "Sir, do you feel horny today?"
I was runnin' through the 6 with my woes

How were these guys ever successful? Opie says nothing and Anthony just makes hacky jokes. Vince is visibly bored talking to them and shuts them down and they take it like the bitches that they are.
At 1:23 of this video Anthony interviews Bob Golic, the guy from the 10 cent beer night video. Funny how the bbboys said they never heard of him when they interviewed this guy one time 10 years ago. They should remember such a joyous occasion.

What the fuck happened to Opie? He was nothing near as big a cunt as he is now. Goofy and hack, sure, but he seems almost happy in life.
He really must've been in love with Ant or something.

I believe the afternoon slot was always better for the show they were doing

I think WJFK in DC had the same set up.

Just watching it you immediately notice Opie's awkwardness and how unnatural his talking is. Its a dead giveaway on who was holding who back.

This was the pre-game show.

I seem to remember their on screen time getting whittled down as the XFL season progressed, then they were gone altogether.
The best were the O/A Cheerleader interactions - www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqiQLJQOsvA .
The long O/A introduction for the XFL, not sure if this only played in the NE - www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtJZ7wsNRZI .
The end of XFL with O/A - www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-jzLn6g7Dg .

Anthony made every single joke. All Opie did was either laugh or say "It sure is!" or "They sure are!".
It's a crime this guy is allowed in entertainment.
