In previous meetings outside the show Jim probably tried to engage Norm in some pretentious discussion about the mundane details of the comedy trade, the ins & outs of life as a comic that civilians could never really relate to but figured out quick Norm wasn't feeling it.
When Norm did his legendary roast, Norton looked irritated & confused anytime the camera panned to him. Later when Jim was on O&A discussing how the roast went, he said nothing made him laugh harder than Norm's set, yet when Norm was finally in the studio, Worm said nothing to Norm other than "They're telling us you have to leave so I can feel up a wrestler."
Good point, Jimmy is probably doing the obligatory Norm MacDonald 'is the greatest' thing all comics seem to be required to say these days, even though I think Norm is one of the best I don't think Jimmy does. It's been obvious that Jimmy doesn't have broad taste & Norms humor can be subtle & at face value sometimes can seem silly but is layered in nuance & It might be over Jimmys head like a lot of other great art (music, movies & books)

I used to think that too, but in the clip of Norm's roast you can see Norton is mouthing words- he's trying to write a joke on the spot about Norm's set- the On Golden Pond joke that Norm came back with.
I don't even think this has anything to do with Jim having any hostile feelings toward Norm. I think he was too afraid of having to handle if a ball buster like Norm pissed off a big shoot fighter like Brock.
I always assumed Jim subconsciously did this because he resented Norm's comeback line that got bigger laughs than Jim's "Henry Fonda picking blueberries" joke at the Bob Saget roast.
He mistakenly put Norm on the spot, something that works for Jimmy to embarrass the typical half-wits who challenge him on O&A. For Norm though, being put on the spot is just asking for him to comedy bitch slap you.
Worse: Ant & CQ carried the interview, Opie and Jim did nothing to make him feel welcome.
It's the way it should have been tbh. I cant stand serious interviewer norton. Anthony is the only one of the 3 who is still semi funny when a guest comes around.
So I guess Hemingway ripped off Twain, and David Foster Wallace ripped off Pynchon, and Nabokov ripped off Tolstoy. Every writer builds from the authors they like. Saying Tolstoy ripped off somebody is saying that every author has ripped off everybody.
pretty much every interview norm does is gold, with such condensed comedy O&A had to keep his total airtime to 15 minutes or the audience might literally laugh their asses off, leading to FCC fines. just my theory on this.

7 MicrowaveYourFork 2016-04-24
"Yeah, that's great Jimmy. Hey! You know what else is great? Crack whores!"

To be fair, the Brock Lesnar interview was a mesmerizing confabulation. Such striking insight!

I like Jim a lot and think the sub's turn against him is baseless hate.
I still wanted to throw a brick at his head when he did this.
-1 Superbad415 2016-04-24
Fuck you fuck face.
-1 joomommyhappy 2016-04-24
Nothing here is ever baseless.

overconsciously, he really is resentful creep
7 nomastornados 2016-04-24
What was the comeback line?
10 avengingbullet 2016-04-24
Jimmy said Norm's set was like watching Henry Fonda pick Blueberries. Norm said there wasn't one person in the room who wouldn't want to watch that.
5 Icculus1833 2016-04-24
that's absolutely it.

Norms podcast was amazing. Search for the joke compilation, it's amazing.

Tolstoy's an overrated hack. He ripped off Turgenev constantly.

I know, I was joking.
2 oldchunkofcoal 2016-04-24
OK. That was an odd thing to joke about haha

I guess it was more of a self-effacing joke about this subreddit, using Russian literature as a subtext.

Norm was so happy to be there when be arrived, mentioned being a fan. Then 15 minutes later, gone.

Opie's job is to reduce the amount of comedy in the room to prevent this, like a PSI release valve.
3 PhilipMarma 2016-04-24
Opie barely said a word. At least he knew his place back then.
2 CommanderStarkiller 2016-04-24
Funny timing, right when artie was going into rehab.
1 DanielRigg 2016-04-24
You can't blame Jimmy for not being prepared for Norm's interview, he was getting ready to interview Brock Lesnar right afterwards.
