How/why did Patrice tolerate Opie so well?

31  2016-04-02 by [deleted]

I am listening to Patrice O'Neal discussing movies on Youtube, and Opie has countless bombs and thoughtless opinions. He often pretends to have seen the movie, or at best says "I'll have to see that one again, heh." Opie often causes the room to go silent and doesn't seem to understand the movies, the conversation, or anything really.

Patrice, being as he would say "righteous," undoubtedly feels the douche vibes from Opie, yet he never really went off on him. Was Opie so dumb and hopeless that Patrice didn't even bother to attack him? Was Opie such a low hanging fruit to Patrice that it wasn't even interesting to dissect his idiocy and hypocrisy? Opie is like the antithesis of Patrice yet these two seemed to get along on some level.

Patrice liked a fair fight. He knew Anthony, Jimmy, Colin, Bobby, Rich and others, staff and guests, could go blow for blow with him and no ones feelings would get hurt. But he knew Opie wasn't his intellectual or comedic equal so except for a rare instance here and there, he just left Opie alone.

It's like the retarded kid at school. Most people could easily fuck with them and dominate them but where's the fun in that? So Opie is the retarded kid of the O & A universe.

And yes you are right, Leech Joe is a nothing, a zilch, a zero who wouldn't have shit if he didn't mooch from his successful YOUNGER brother.

Explain why he bullies women then nigga

He didn't bully women. Patrice afforded them the same respect he did everyone else. It wasn't his fault that very few of them could stand toe to toe with him. They lost arguments with him and then played the victim role.

They couldn't stand toe to toe with him because Patrice lost his toes to diabetes.

That's the bit!

Yeah they couldn't stand toe to toe with him because his big ol' belly was in the way, right gang?!

*nigger

Because he liked him. I know that's a boring answer, but they used to sometimes talk about hanging out after the show when Patrice was in. Patrice also defended Opie a few times when he got attacked by callers or instant feedback. You can have boring, unfunny people you still genuinely like for some reason or another.

Yeah I've never understood how people in here can't seem to grasp that not everyone you get along with in life has to be one of the funniest people on earth. Opie pushed for Patrice professionally, Sirius didn't support it.

Everyone I get along with is fawking ha-larious.

Opie also helped out Patrice tremendously with setting up The Black Phillip Show.

Indeed, the Opester always went to comics shows to support them. Love or hate the guy, that's a good friend to have.

Patrice was smart and knew about the greggshells

Right, he's good at playing it off.

The thing about Opie is that he isn't a fake, and I think he finds what Opie is to be a pretty inoffensive family man who doesn't have it in him to have deeply entrenched ideas about controversial topics. He says dumb things, things that you wouldn't think adults would say, but unlike Anthony or Vos, he's not expressing a controversial idea that Patrice finds logically inconsistent or reprehensible, or insisting that you deserve to be in comedy after a horrific bomb, delivered like a retarded man. He just says a boring thing in a dumb way, and it's clearly not something you can challenge him on, because the thought he's trying to make is probably a nothing thought that was poorly expressed

Just to be clear about him not being a fake, I mean to say that he often says things that aren't true, but no one really believes them or cares if they are true. They are like perfectly designed untrue statements that make anyone he talks to think, "eh, it's not worth it". And frankly, it's hard to tell if he is guilty of lying or if he believes those things. If you did call him out, there's no worthwhile payoff because you didn't challenge a stance, tear down a massive ego, or make him self reflect. I think if you actually are in that room, your instinct is to roll right over a lot of the things he says.

Yeah, I think this is more what Patrice was thinking. He didn't mind burning bridges, so I don't think he worried about not being invited back on the show if he didn't walk on greggshells. Opie was just a harmless idiot who treated Patrice with respect. Why bust his balls if it's not going to lead to a laugh.

Man, I wish there were more of these kinds of discussions on this subreddit. O&A was like a million case studies in psychology.

because the thought he's trying to make is probably a nothing thought that was poorly expressed.

I've also noticed that when Patrice went really deep into a topic, he would sometimes start at point B and try to get to point C. Opie, having the gaps in his toughts, will bring up something that he thinks is coming in from a different angle but in actuality is point A.

This would slow down or halt the discussion. Patrice would start on B because he wrongly assumed everyone would be on the same page. Patrice would then have to stop and go back to bring Opie up to speed and he had to be nice about it or else greggshells.

Well put. Perfect

In this clip, Patrice goes after Opie hilariously, but instead of laughing like everyone else, Opie awkwardly tries to explain his point. He gets so embarrassed and uncomfortable that Patrice has to say "Alright!" and immediately stops the joke. Patrice learned from moments like this to not go after Opie and derail the whole show.

Opie is comedy quicksand. If you try and help him, you're only going in too.

they were friends. jesus, this sub is just a bunch of obsessive homosexuals

We're not obsessive.

He knew Opie was lame, he had pity for him. If you listen, you can see in his mannerisms that he gets that Anthony and Jim are the funny ones, and Opie is the typical suburban white guy, and I think he developed a pitying like/respect for him.

I don't think it was pity. I think on air Opie is different from off air. Remember when Ant brought up "The Opie Dance" that he does when he's drunk? Kenny even attested to it. And his appearance on Rogan's podcast? He was really chill. Once you get Opie off air and away from Ant, he's probably not as bad as we like to think he is.

Also Patrice loved to babble and Opie loved to let other people have the floor. It doesn't surprise me that they hung out.

Like so many other comedians and guests, Patrice was forced to walk on greggshells, which was undoubtedly difficult for a man of his size.

I love how this is some Cato-esque coda to people's posts now.

I can't believe I just read "Cato-esque coda" in this subreddit.

I mean, it's pretty simple, Patrice was friends with Opie. He was also friends with Anthony. Truth is he would've had more of a gripe with Anthony being a legitimate racist than with Opie just being kind of a cornball on the radio. Either way, he obviously legitimately liked both of them, why is he going to call them out when he's friends with them?

I always got the feeling that he liked him. I'm not sure why he did but he laughed at his jokes and never went after him hard.

It seemed to me as him laughing at how bad Opie's jokes were. He laughed at Opie instead of with him.

Patrice knew how the bread got buttered over there.

Opie and Patrice were friends. That's the simple reason. Him being friends with Anthony was also the reason why he and Anthony never had a massive blow up in the studio.

Patrice calls Opie a faggot. (3:00 for mobile)

https://youtu.be/RjSAXiNkFuA?t=3m

Ironically it's one of the only times Opie makes fun of himself.

Patrice went after Opie plenty of times, calling his opinions stupid and what not.

If anyone can post an example of this I'm sure we'd all be interested in discussing it. I can't think of any off the top of my head, besides the clip posted earlier.

I can give you one example off the top of my head. Unfortunately the clip would be hard to find. Opie talks about how you have to watch bad tv and movies with your girlfriend and Patrice basically says he's a pussy for doing it.

actually thats the only times Patrice would directly challenge Opie. Opie sounded like such a flaming faggot when talking about how in love he was. He once got too close to unlocking Opie and Opie decided he didnt want to talk about his love life anymore.

Also they didnt take Patrices advice seriously on women because they thought it couldnt work for regular people.

If anyone can find the clip of Opie talking about how how he's never wanted success/money for women, Patrice was basically flabbergasted by his idiocy.

the opie's nipples thing was fucking hilarious, not sure if that was posted

why did I laugh so hard at this post, especially after the last line?

I'm really glad you brought this up. It's something I've thought about a lot. I think you're right about the low hanging fruit thing. I also got the vibe that patrice felt sorry for opie.

Being on the show frequently helps your career and sells tickets.

I have asshole customers that spend lots of money. If they never spent any money and were assholes I'd ban them.

Patrice was always awesome. His wife, Von Decarlo, is on YouTube tonight @ 9PM talking new Patrice Documentary coming out this summer. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEx_z3MYxb_eGNVEjMtGnAA/live

What we've learned over the years about "them people" is that they respect the $. Cornball musicians get respect because of their earnings. Same thing
