I'm not crazy about the first season, but by the second it was easily one of the best shows on tv for a solid 9 or 10 years.
Also, not sure if you've ever read this but its a detailed explanation about what happened to The Simpsons and how and why it went from being one of the best shows on TV to just another generic adult cartoon. It's worth reading if you're into The Simpsons and have the time.
To be fair, this article does explain why that first season was pretty revolutionary not just as a cartoon but as a piece of fiction in general. It gets at a lot of aspects of it that I never really considered but it makes a lot of sense after you read it and realize where television was at the time.
