This is dumb, and that British man is dumb, just because he has an accent doesn't make him smart, dummy.

He doesn't even need to be smart to destroy that argument.

I think Paul had a valid argument. Louis ck says nigger and faggot and talks about hitting kids, people laugh because he made it funny. If you get on stage and scream I hate niggers and faggots and murder kids!!!!! Most people wouldn't laugh. That's the point. If you can't make something funny don't say it just to say it because no one will think it's funny. Have you ever heard Paul's stand-up?

I sort of agree, but what is funny is subjective. anytime someone says something controversial one of the things that fucking nerds do is say "i'm not offended, it just wasn't funny"(in a nerd voice). which is of course, the opposite of the truth. The first time I heard doug stanhope i remember saying "it just wasn't funny", but i just didn't understand it at the time. if something offends you....of course it's not gonna be funny to you, but that doesn't mean it isn't funny.

True. And that's what he was saying. You have to read the audience. If your 50 and all you have is blowjob jokes, whether they're good jokes or not, if your at a club in some college town with a bunch of 27 yr old comdians, they probably won't laugh at your jokes. Then it's your own fault for not having more diverse material.

It's not a valid argument though. If it was then why would anybody support George Carlin or Lenny Bruce, the government was just trying to help their comedy by enforcing restrictions, right?

There's an audience for everybody, it's not a case of "nobody in the world likes your comedy so you must stop doing it". Like the guy in the video said maybe Paul F Tompkins just doesn't have any idea what he's actually talking about, which would be a bit strange given that it's a pretty widely discussed topic in comedy.

Because they were funny. You can say whatever the fuck you want if your funny.

Do you think SJWs would give someone making a race/rape/gay joke a pass because it was funny?

Someone will always think something isn't funny. If the audience your trying to attract is SJWs , than you probably shouldn't make those jokes. If it isn't SJWs , than its fine. And I'm done so you win

Good.

No only will they not give it a pass, not a one of them is smart or funny enough to even recognize funny.

Thank you. Finally someone who understands.

You certainly don't think the outrage culture being bred by the anti-free speech movement gives a flying fuck if what they find offensive is funny, do you?

I don't know what point your trying to make is. I will say I think Sam hyde is hilarious . but I can see why people wouldn't think the same. I thought Opie and Anthony was hilarious. But I can why some people wouldn't think the same. You can't force people to like something.

This point is irrelevant to the outraged, anti-free speech brigade. Their argument is you shouldn't be able to even hear these things. It's one thing to not think person A is funny, it's a different group of people who don't want person A to have a platform to perform.

Yeah, I get that. But I don't think Paul f Tompkins was talking about that.

Another of this subs retarded acting like they know a shits worth about comedy.

You don't. Listen to paul and shit the fuck up.

Hear hear

Right out of the gates the video-maker stops the video to point out that Paul is going to say "but" BUT it was not a controversial "but" that he was saying. He was simply saying that you can make any joke and need to be aware that some people are going to be offended by the joke no matter what... that's a good point (and a true point). And saying that this political correct culture helps keep comedy fresh is no different than when Opie and Anthony and Jimmy said that being on terrestrial radio made them funnier because they had to find different/creative ways to surprise people and make them laugh without just hitting them over the head with the obvious vulgar humor that people expect. Jerry Seinfeld hates PC culture and he agrees that choosing language deliberately can make you more funny..

(And for the record I hate pointless PC shit but Paul F Tompkins isn't always PC and he isn't making terrible points here.. he was a writer on Mr. Show with Bob and Dave which was not PC at all and his standup isn't PC and he's on ComedyBangBang all the time and he's not PC on there either... I dunno why you think he's a PC faggot...)

Did you watch the whole video?

His whole argument is about self censorship, current year, "nobody is trying to stop you saying things".

Dude watch the original video

Did you watch the whole video?

Yes bobo, did you watch the original video without all the cut up faggot commentary?

Yes, I watched it. It's very stupid or at the very least completely uninformed.

Nobody is trying to stop you saying things... you can say whatever you want... You just will appeal to a smaller audience. Nobody is passing laws to ban you from saying anything you want. If you are funny you will maintain your audience. Paul F Tompkins isn't going out of business even though he still says whatever he wants.. he just has to appeal to the audience who wants to hear him. It's basically like selling a car.. don't try to sell a car to a person who doesn't want to buy a car or a person who can't afford to buy a car.. if you try to sell your car to a person who wants to buy a car you can still sell it. That doesn't mean that people are trying to stop you from selling a car. It just means that you need to focus your attempts on interested buyers. There are plenty of interested buyers for not PC comedy.. and making the PC audience laugh takes a little more but it makes you funnier if you are able to also appeal to them.

Yes people are trying to stop others from saying things, that's the whole goal of the PC movement. You are at least aware that they constantly contact companies and employers trying to get people fired and trying to ruin business relationships simply because someone said something they don't like, aren't you?

Yes... and the company can then make a free market decision to fire somebody or not to fire somebody... that is part of capitalism. Customers can complain. Do you want a law where a company isn't allowed to fire somebody based on a complaint? I see no reason for the government to get involved here.

That's fine. Nobody is talking about getting the government involved.

Just pointing out that it's not really the free market, it's mob tactics, collusion, and ideologically driven. Take twitter's new silencing tactics for example - they only go one way - SJWs getting people banned or suspended but SJWs are free to do as they please and they won't be punished by twitter. It's the same with the "free market" firings.

Ok... but Twitter is a private company.. they can do whatever they want.. that is free market.. You disagree with them. I disagree with them. I still don't want the government (only other option) involved so I'll let the free market work that out. If enough people are pissed off and stop using twitter they will change their policies. That is how the free market works. It isn't always going to favor conservative ideas. You can't just blame "mob tactics" every time the market doesn't work in your favor.. sometimes it's just that the customer base for twitter is more liberal than conservative because twitter has more Millennials than 60 year olds using their service... and their biggest future clients are young kids who are more liberal than conservative.. they are making a free market decision.

Yes, I just agreed with you on that.

I think we've gotten away from the main topic of Paul Tompkins being a PC faggot, or at the very least just a really stupid guy who talks about thimgs he doesn't understand.

He probably knows more about speech on comedy than either of us..

Speech on comedy?

I meant to say "and" not "on."

They don't have a constitution with a free speech amendment. It's not the same.

The European Union doesn't have a couple hundred year old constitution written for a specific counry..

I like Paul F. Tompkins. his characters on Doug Loves Movies are by far the best episodes of that podcast.

Paul F Tompkins is popular in Portland, nuff said.

arguments about what makes something funny are inherently boring and worthless

Paul f Thompkins is a brilliant comedian. Sorry he doesn't throw enough racist shit in his act for you, cunt.

Hard to get bitch slapped by a guy uploading videos of a pixelated brain (that's also ON FIRE!) to YouTube.

Also, this video is more than four times as long as the original video. What dispute has ever been won by the side that takes 450% longer to get its point across?

you PC too bra? damn....I didn't realize he was all PC, I liked him from Mr. Show but his stand up is definitely very tame
