It's not just about the Chip show being scripted, it's about how Chip and those characters only work as funny one-liners played against people having normal conversations. The humor is Chip's awfulness bringing everything to a screeching halt. That's what makes it funny. And you lose that by putting Chip into his own world. Then he just becomes annoying and predictable.
And of course Jim avoids that conversation completely and explains that it's actually our fault that we don't find the show funny because he "knows Chip better than we do".
You fuckers are unbelievable. I thought he did a good job explaining how bad it was. It's like arguing with a stubborn woman. Bitches who will twist shit, won't let it go, just so they can win arguments.
Yeah, like that is some kind of reasonable explanation. He basically rationalizes the fact that he's clearly shoehorning his characters into a format that just doesn't work for them. But I guess that's what you do when your career hits a brick wall and this is all you have.
I felt the exact same way about the Borat movie. Loved the character, hated the movie. It was totally contrived, as though the audience was supposed to buy into the idea that Borat was an actual person from Kazakstan on a quest to meet Pamela Anderson. That whole plot and everything around it was absurd and brought the whole movie down.
The funny thing about the Borat character is that the audience was always in on the joke, and the skits were played accordingly. The TV show didn't try to sell Borat as real, and everyone got to laugh at the absurdity of it all. Half the comedy was just plain disbelief that Sacha Baron Cohen was so committed to the premise.
When you remove that element and try to sell Borat as a real person, it all kinda just becomes dumb and mean. There's no wink and nod to the audience to make it fun.
This is one of the stupidest opinions i have ever read in the ocean of stupid opinions that is the internet. No one was trying to sell him as a real person. The stupid plot was just a setup to do a lot of the exact same things Borat did on the show. The Ali G movie sucked. You probably loved Bruno because of all the dick. Borat was hilarious.
Dude even someone with Bobo level intelligence could tell it was obviously a character, there was no attempt to make the audience think otherwise. The funny part comes from nobody in the movie being in on it. It's completely obvious to the audience, I don't know what you're talking about.
What Jim needs to do is watch the Adam Sandler movie "Jack & Jill". I'm sure when Sandler was walking around doing the unbearable sister character he was making everyone laugh. But having a dumb character you do to make people laugh vs making it a main character in something that you have to sit & watch for a period of time can be so painful.
It makes sense. He was on a radio show for years with a rapidly declining fan base. It's always smart to write an entire animated series based on an inside joke only 70 people will understand. Especially when you get those 70 idiots to foot the bill.
You guys can make fun of Jim all you want. You've earned it. He's spending YOUR money.
And his response was to say he wouldn't be able to get all the other characters in if he did a man on the street type thing... but we do not care about scripted uncle paul, edgar, ted. He's only happy about the funding level it's at now because he put $40K in, and he's almost to that. If he gets $50K, that covers his $40K and pays for the perks. So the fans paid for the teaser, and he didn't.
Borat was a hilarious movie. Also Borat came to my home town Katy Texas, and learned how to play football from the Katy High School coach in the movie. Katy High School is the National Champions in high school football this year. Hollla at ya boy.
He goes on to say Bobby liked it, Kenny liked it .. oh, and Jenny Carm is "huge part of Chip Chipperson's life" - but we don't care because it's not FUNNY. Comic-con Chip is funny, Chip on the show is funny...
Listen to the goddamn show before posting your opinions. He basically said, instead of a video of Jimmy asking for money, he used cartoons to ask for money. He's not doing it to make ANY money.
He should understand because it's not good. Jimmy would really benefit from watching some stuff. He's clueless about any television comedy, and it shows.
Or at least hire somebody who knows something. Idk I guess it's hard to judge cause it wasn't a real pilot.
When jim tells that caller "maybe you're right" it fucking enrages me. No Jim you're wrong. You tried to form an argument didn't do any research and got told off immediately. Borat was partly acted but mostly real life situations. If anything the whole thing that you didn't know what was acted and what was real worked in its favor and the whole Pamela Anderson story line just kept it nicely together. You simply can't make a movie entirely around just interviews.

We're not comics, so we don't understand comedy

Wait... does he think everyone is Borat were actors?
3 bizzlbone 2016-02-16
I think he's just saying it was a bit more scripted than it was on TV which was just completely random and nobody knew what to expect.

The movie opened with children beating a Jew egg, you'd have to have a sub-retard IQ to think they were trying to pass Borat off as real.

The whole thing is just an attempt to fuck his ex girlfriend.
3 K1bbler 2016-02-16
She's way out of his league now.

No way. Guaranteed they still fuck occasionally. For perspective her mouth has been on jimmys butthole. Fat jimmy at that.

In the end he has to WRITE JOKES, you cant laugh ironically the whole time
4 AssMcPlay 2016-02-16

As soon as he sees Sandler in drag, he's going to stop listening and drop his UFC sweatpants around his ankles.

I remember the Borat movie having quite a few 'real life trolling' segments.

"I'm not looking to make a shit-ton of money."
So he is looking to make money from this Indiegogo.
Gotcha, thanks.
The Flexible Funding guarantees that.

200k is just a drop in the bucket people.
2 sanfrancisco69er 2016-02-16
He said this to explain why he DOES understand why people hated the chip cartoon....you didnt notice that?
0 EmmSee 2016-02-16

Sure, but I don't see how the takeaway from this was that he doesn't understand why people don't like it?
2 packitchofsositch 2016-02-16
He said that?? Wow, I must have completely missed it on the show. That's pretty naive of him.

the movies have the same amount of scripting as the show

Fucking bizarro world.
1 EskimoEscrow 2016-02-16
He was about to make a great point about how scripting something that's funnier when un-scripted can be impossible.
1 takyon_deathyon 2016-02-16
He's going way too deep into explaining why his show wasn't funny
And him saying his ex is "crucial to Chips survival" is pretty lame
1 DrSANDMAN09 2016-02-16

It was a real pilot until people didn't like it. The indiegogo page itself states 200k to make "5 more" episodes like the pilot.
