What are some early misconceptions you had about O&A.. that you now feel ashamed about?
13 2016-02-05 by [deleted]
I couldn't tell Colin Quinn, Rich Vos and Club Soda Kenny's voices apart. Thought they were all the same guy for the first month I got into the show. I also had no idea Opie was a Michael Bay-looking motherfucker and found him more likeable than Ant.

My early misconception that I now feel bad about is that I thought they weren't a group of whiny, emotional bitches.
7 chicken-named-mike 2016-02-05
Exactly. I liked them because I thought they were sociopaths like me!
34 HowsThatFeelFucker 2016-02-05
That they were actually anywhere near as big as Stern.
11 Clown_Shoe 2016-02-05
Do you live in NY? Im on LI and I thought that they were close as well. They are big here but outside of NY they are unknowns.
7 TheTigerDriver 2016-02-05
Live in NYC, can confirm. I guess we should have figured it out when they were being dropped in syndication around the country while still going strong here.
6 TrackSuitVos 2016-02-05
I thought the same thing. Damn snake oil.
1 AzraelApollyon 2016-02-05
That half billion dollar contract from 2006 didn't tip you off that O&A weren't anywhere near the demand of Stern?
4 BoardroomBimmy 2016-02-05
In retrospect its all very obvious, but at the time, a lot of us bought into the hype because we believed in O&A. Howard lost a ton of people with his move to Sirius. Meanwhile, O&A were doing both satellite and terrestrial, something nobody did before as far as I know. Plus, Louie CK was blowing up with his new show on HBO, O&A pests were getting onto TV here and there, they made it sound like their live events were crazy and huge, more cities were picking up the show after Stern left, they were exposing Stern as a hypocrite when they are the real deal, all that...It just seemed like the natural progression that Stern was on his way down and O&A were on their way up.
And I can't speak for anyone else, but the vacuum Stern left was huge and I felt in desperate need for something to fill it. David Lee Roth was a massive failure. O&A were on the radar at the time...I don't know. It just seemed like they were going to pick up where Stern left off.

I blamed super agent Bob Eatman
33 A_lad_insane_bowie 2016-02-05
At first i didn't realize that most of it was hack radio bits
30 HoagieBoi 2016-02-05
I totally bought into the "Above all else...REAL" bullshit. I figured if they spent so much time smashing other radio shows for being fake, they had to be the most honest broadcasters in the business. It turns out they're more like those politicians that oppose gay marriage and are then found blowing a fifteen year old in an airport bathroom.
-7 pcro99 2016-02-05
For the whole six months that tag line was used?
1 MaxKawalski 2016-02-05
FUCKing stop it.
0 HoagieBoi 2016-02-05
Even before the official tag line, that was one of their major talking points. They were honest, while guys like Mancow, Stern, Bubba, etc. were liars.

I'M SO SICK OF THESE RADIO LIARS
always lies
25 Binski13 2016-02-05
Bob Kelly and Jimmy sounded like the same person back in the day

I used to like Opie. How's that for shame?
9 Dawgsie 2016-02-05
SHAME!

kill yourself
-3 MaxKawalski 2016-02-05
Don't say that. Never advocate suicide. Respect that... or else.
2 stinkskc 2016-02-05
I don't think anyone's actually going to kill themselves because someone on the tiys sub told them to. Calm down.
15 _AVLX_ 2016-02-05
When I first started listening when I was about 16 (21 now) I made the glaring mistake of thinking Anthony was an intelligent person.
Took far too long to realize he's really just a tin knocker that was given far too much money and fame for his level of maturity and intellect.
4 stinkskc 2016-02-05
Enjoy your 20s... I fucking wasted mine. A lot of the last 2 years listening to this stupid show.
-1 herpacin 2016-02-05
Yes because only smart mature people are famous.
3 _AVLX_ 2016-02-05
Didn't imply that anywhere in my post. I'm just saying that at the end of the day, Ant really is just emotionally stunted trash (albeit funny and entertaining trash), whereas when I was younger I thought of him to be poignant and intelligent.
-1 herpacin 2016-02-05
You fucking stated it, there was no need to imply.

That Opie hated management and was ready to walk away from the show if things didn't change.
5 Gym_Norton 2016-02-05
i bought the podcast talk as well, then they re sign every time, had my doubts but i also bought the aboveallelse thing
2 DeafandMutePenguin 2016-02-05
I just caught your username. Have you been "eeetin behter"?
2 Gym_Norton 2016-02-05
my flair says "eating pecker", very clever huh
12 HowsThatFeelFucker 2016-02-05
That Opie was 'steering the ship' to good effect.

At first I thought Jimmy was a straight male
11 im_not 2016-02-05
When I was in college and first started listening to the show, I thought opie was the coolest one and the one I'd most like to hang out with. 😑🔫

Coke floats in my cup. Coke floats in my cup.
10 kevin121312 2016-02-05
Jim was straight
Opie was a professional broadcaster
Anthony liked 'of age' girls
9 BoardroomBimmy 2016-02-05
When they were busy getting kicked off every radio market in America during the crossover days, I was in my 'These radio stations are fuckin pussies and don't want real radio, maaaaan!" In reality, they were getting pisspoor ratings and getting beat by the local shows fair and square. I would have kicked them off, too.

Above all else...REAL!
7 sholf 2016-02-05
I thought they were young.
6 KnickedUp 2016-02-05
When I first started listening, I thought the "regulars" like Vos, Bawby, Florentine, etc were super famous people making a ton of money. Then I worked for a comedy/music promoter and learned the truth.
6 AngeloMacon 2016-02-05
I believed most of Opie's stories during the WNEW days. Punching a Frenchman underwater, kicking a dog to death, being poor, etc.
2 MouseCunt 2016-02-05
Can't forget getting in a fist fight with a cabbie through the little window.
2 RedOak_Candor 2016-02-05
He got some good hitssssss...
5 zygotian 2016-02-05
i for sure pictured opie looking like a baseball hat wearing ghost hunter
5 Opthony 2016-02-05
Mine is pretty much the same as everyone else: the realness. Back when I first started listening, I really bought into everything they did. When I listen back now, some of the stuff goes way to well planned or sounds scripted.
5 ashsmashers 2016-02-05
I started listening at a time when Jim was doing a lot of chip and I thought he was his own person. Like maybe like a bobo type weirdo they had chilling in studio? I'm not sure.
4 Mantis_Toboggan369 2016-02-05
That they'd be there forever ever.
4 mikethelistener 2016-02-05
I thought Opie's voice was Anthony's and visa versa.
3 justchippinyaaaa 2016-02-05
For a long time I thought Roland and Bobo were the same being.
3 RearNakedGrope 2016-02-05
I actually thought their phone lines were messed up amd they couldn't hang up at times.
3 ImJustRiffin 2016-02-05
My biggest misconception was that the Than and Sam show was anything more than a waste of time.
3 sloppysammy 2016-02-05
I thought they were intelligent men who had their shit together.
3 BeerCanThick 2016-02-05
I thought Ant and Opie, even though they weren't friends, were at least friendly and on good terms with each another, even after the Grape Fight thing. The biggest thing post-firing for me was learning how long they disliked, even hated each other. They stuck it out solely for the money for almost 15 years. They hated each other since 1999.
I also thought Opie and Jim were friends, real friends. It turns out Opie "isn't that close with him" and a consistent thing that has happened for a year and a half is, Opie asks Jimmy why he even does the show, clearly fishing for a compliment, and gets shut down. It's never, "Man, I like you a lot, Opie. You're really talented and fun to work with and hang out with it." It's always, "I signed a contract, the money is good and I like to perform."
Jimmy sounded like he had enough of Opie and I know he is the Paycheck Kid and everything but I believed him, at least in that moment, that he was walking in October.
3 Opthony 2016-02-05
I go back and forth about this. I am sure they grew apart, but remember that Opie is a sensitive, over reacting asshole. Usually the info on their relationship off the air is brought up during angry moments when Opie is all about doing damage at any cost. Before the big split there were mentions of calls and texts and they seemed closer as the 20 year anniversary stuff was happening. Also Opie disguised himself and went on an episode of LFTC. If they really hated each other for so long, i don't think these things would have happened.
3 sanfrancisco69er 2016-02-05
Not to toot my own horn but since I started listening to youtube clips I could ALWAYS tell there was one that was not in the same league as the other ones, and when I could fully tell their voices apart I realized that one was Opie.

3 MouseCunt 2016-02-05
If they lactate natty ice I might have a little suckle.
2 FlukemansCloaca 2016-02-05
I originally thought they were playing characters. Everyone said how great they are at radio, I assumed Ant played a dumb right winger, that Opie played up his dumb mom-like personality, and Jimmy was funny. This was all incorrect and they really are just three very lucky douchebags.
1 McGowan9 2016-02-05
At first, looking at the pictures/screen grabs, I thought Opie's voice belonged to the pockmarked guinea and Anthony's voice belonged to the foetal alcohol syndrome, ginger Wahlberg cousin.
1 shinkleboutit 2016-02-05
Was hard to tell bob kelly and Jim nortons voice apart. And who was o,and who was a
1 Sicboy69 2016-02-05
I was under the impression Opie was the douche & Ant was great but it turned out they were both douchebags in the end.
1 sephferguson 2016-02-05
I couldnt tell the difference between Norton and Bob Kelly for a while.
1 stinkskc 2016-02-05
How can you not tell vos' apart.
I couldn't tell ona apart for a while and it's funny because that's what Howard always used to talk shit about them for
1 VladiRad 2016-02-05
The first couple of times I listened, I thought Anthony's voice was Opie's and Opie's voice was Anthony's. I'm not ashamed of it though.

No misconceptions from me, the comics I liked, the two douches and their low brow brand of juvenile humor and hacky 'bits' with faked airs of self importance I never cared for, I really did see them for who they were, despicable hacks.
