It's how he makes a name for himself. And then it doubles as proving his point. He shows off all the hate he gets and says that all that hate is representative of why he needs to take the positions he takes and it feeds into a cycle. It's like when Gavin goes on Fox News and tells the girl he's debating she should be home making dinner for her kids and not working. He does that for the outrage and then the outrage is what makes him more popular to his base/gives him more views.
