Shane Smith remains one of the best figures in the media alive. I'm curious why you think Gavin fucking McInnes is in any position to protest personal relationships. He's literally one of the most despicable human beings alive.
if that were true he would be dead. the ones who actually go to dangerous or groundbreaking places end up blown up or kidnapped. this has never happened to any vice reporter or freelancer, much less shane. it's all a ruse. you only believe it because that's what they are selling. the new york times has more embedded journalists in more active warzones but they're selling news, not the safe fringe.
shane went on one government-constructed and supervised tour of north korean landmarks and everyone started murmuring that this fat fuck was the real deal.
No, he went to Liberia and that's where people started stating loudly that he was the real deal, because he fucking IS.
you have it backwards; there have been documentaries and stories written about liberia before, they just weren't structured like a vacation video and so you never heard about them.
he went with cameras and gave promotional time to renegade generals and gang leaders who used it as an opportunity to conduct basic PR for themselves. like all vice documentaries, the details they passively glance over are the actual stories. but they aren't competent enough to tell those stories so they just shuffle onto the next half-explained situation.

Why would he do that?

I think you forgot to add TIC in the title.
And I wouldn't recommend he does. They're just empty calories.

Unrelated, but Gavin missed the gravy train that is Vice Media.
Sometimes you just got to shut the fuck up and grin.

If he's got enough money to live comfortably and not have to see Shane Smith on a daily basis it's probably worth it.

I doubt a piece of shit like Gavin is in a position to even remotely think that way.

His content is always interesting, he's a manager who directs the best media outlet in the world, he goes places nobody else will.

How much was Gavin given to walk away?

I don't know. But Vice wasn't nearly as valuable when he left. By leaving, he left at least $100 million on the table.

And now he does a mid morning show on a online subscription podcast network and people listen to him like he is a wise man
