Both achieved monetary success and notoriety on a now-dying medium. The firing of Anthony was horrendous for the brand and put both of their livelihoods in danger.
Wisely, they decided to feud as a way to cross promote--and it has been wildly successful. People that "hate" Opie are now constantly monitoring his twitter feed and listening to the show for ammunition. Anthony's fans are obsessively monitoring his periscope and other activity for the next Opie rant.
The worst thing that could have happened to them following the firing is to fade into obscurity. This "feud" allows them both to continue to garner attention and is a great business plan.

If it is a work it's a worse stunt than when Opie rubbed baby shit on his face when no one was even egging him on to do it. The woman cried on the air and all that happened to Ant was Opie called him human garbage.
There is no way Opie would have tolerated this much prolonged humiliation for a radio bit. It is not in his nature to accept being the butt of the joke.
