I really doubt Fez's decision to "quit" was entirely his. SiriusXM tested out the Bennington show on Fridays for 6 months with Gail before Fez announced his retirement and Gail was hired full time as his replacement. He had been given a warning by the company that he was going to be let go if he didn't step up his game and start bringing something to the table.

If he does anything, it will honestly be FM radio, at most. He'd probably just retire. What else does he know how to do? He never branched out or put in any work besides shitty viral flops. Running a board and programming a music station is something that high school and college radio DJs can do with ease. It's not really a bankable skill. I really wouldn't understand it if O&J was renewed next year. Yeah, Tits may have neutered the show to make management happy, but how the hell is the show making enough money for SiriusXM to justify its budget? There's no way Steven Singer's paying enough to cover Opie's salary. This is a show with zero name recognition, traction, or reason to exist.

Unfortunately I doubt it. O&J on its own is not even in the ballpark of what O&A was at its height, or even during it's doing-pretty-good days from '06-'11, but stand up comedy as an industry is too booming these days, and O&J and its "network" are still Sirius's mainline into that industry. They aren't gonna throw their claim to stand-up comedy prominence in the trash, despite the fact that they probably should.

It's really hard to get fired in radio. There was a show in Sacramento that actually KILLED one of their listeners. The idea that Sirius would fire Opie for underperforming is silly.

Our idea of the show doing poorly is not Sirius XM's idea of it doing poorly, or even the general pedestrian population's idea of such. O&J still makes the news these days, with certain guest revelations and such. It's a bore most of the time, but it's still considered "relevant."

Shit like Opie and Jimmy fighting on air is meaningless to general audiences and management. It's a "shock radio show." No one else pays as close attention to the interpersonal narratives of the program as we do.

Furthermore, Opie's the "seasoned radio vet" with a degree in the field. We all know the story of suits trying to can Anthony in the infancy of the partnership because Anthony wasn't technically an experienced broadcaster. Opie keeps business moving. They ain't getting rid of him.

If anything, Jim's getting the boot, which is a shame.

To be honest I think Jim is being held back in his career now. Being let go could force him (or free him) to try harder and find some new outlets for his talent.
