Dave Chappelle is everything I want a comedian to be. Doesn't pander (Schumer). Doesn't focus on getting a message across (Louie). Not obsessed with fame (Aziz).
Just loves comedy and knows that he's good at it. If Chappelle is performing near you and you live stand up comedy, go and see him. It really is incredible.
Chappelle literally walked away from millions when he saw how his work was becoming a minstrel show by the way fans and network execs were treating him. He's a true boss.
I saw him go on Letterman and pretty much beg comedy central for his job back. That turned me off. Plus it's an sjw world now, no way that could get back on the air.
I've seen him multiple times. I saw him at a college right after the Rick James story, and the crowd was rude as fuck and going apeshit with quotes. He had to keep stopping and explain that he made the show, why would they just be saying things back to him that he said? I saw him on the tour after that one in a massive theater, and they had signs posted all over the theater to not heckle, and if you yelled out, you would be immediately tossed. I guess he finally had enough of the show quotes.
He's killed every time I saw him. I was crying laughing from the first few minutes to the end, water just streaming down my cheeks.
I dunno man. Chappelle royally screwed over Neal Brennan. I don't know if the motivator was money or ego or something else but he fucked his own partner. There was no
Chappelle show without Brennan. He helped Dave to become a millionaire and then Dave turned his back on him.
Counterpoint: I listen to Neals podcast, and he comes off like a real cunt. I mean, he might be a good writer / producer, but his stand up stinks, and he's condescending as fuck to people. He may have pissed Dave off too, especially regarding business. If anything, Dave gave Neal tons of cash via the show and DVD sales, Neal hasn't ever produced anything on his own I find the least bit entertaining.
They co-created Chappelle show. Chappelle has said as much. And if I'm not mistaken more than a few people have said that Chappelle was fucking around most of the time while Neal was keeping the show together. All the drama around season 3 with Chappelle leaving the show, Dave can say whatever he wants but I'm suspicious that the guilt from the Neal situation was a big contributor to his crisis.
I know they co-created it that's never been disputed. However, Chappelle was the face and actual funny part of the show. Neal, regardless of how good he can write, would not have had a funny show without Dave. Chappelle was already killing in the standup world and had a funny cult movie. I'm not saying Chappelle didn't ruin a future cash windfall for the both of them, I'm saying Neal got a shitload of money from the show either way. Dave bailing on a crazy high contract to try and keep his sanity is his prerogative, and I don't really blame him for not doing it. He said multiple times that he wasn't feeling the material, felt the higher ups and staff were laughing AT him and not with him, and wanted him to tone down the racial humor. He also said he wanted to just hang out with his family as well.
Louie has always wanted to come across as an artist whereas Chapelle has always wanted to come across as a comedian. That's just my opinion and I love Louie but the more famous he gets I haven't enjoyed his specials as much as I did when he was on the rise (Chewed Up/Hilarious)
Remember when Louie hired a boxing trainer to help with his stand up? Guys a pretentious douche, always has been, couple funny bits in his career don't save him from that
I love Louie. I don't want to give off the impression that I hate him. He's my favorite comedian and I will always time in when he has a new special and I do find him to be very intelligent and insightful. That being said he does get on his high horse and gets too self important at times but I can never turn against him. Chewed Up is my favorite Stand Up special of all time and I still think he has that level of funny in him. We just are going to have to wait a while. Funny is funny and most comics nowadays try to hard to meaningful and add a message/agenda to their acts so they can appear intellectual. It's phony. Funny should always come first and it suffers if you try to make it cool
I posted this story before but here it is again since it's relevant. I got to hang out with him a few months ago, he's a really cool dude. I was Djing a low key night in the LES and he came into the bar. He asked to play a song and I asked if he just wanted to DJ. He played music for like 4 hours we all got wasted and smoked weed at the end. Best part was when he played creep by radio head and all of us were singing while he did air guitar behind the bar. One of my best nights ever.
Yeah I actually lost my bike that night too. I was so drunk and high and about to ride it home over the bridge, decided against it and locked it up. Looked for like 45 minutes the next day and couldn't find it haha. Worth it though.
Don't you understand that everyone here has no life and lives in their moms basement? Ask Kurt Metzger, we are all irrelevant nothing's. Now take down that Photoshopped pic, sir.
I was just watching some of the first clip you posted and found it ironic/hypocritical of Chappelle to quit Chappelle Show cuz he thought people were laughing at him instead of laughing with him. Watch some of the bloopers of the asian man, they were having him say things just so they could laugh at him. It's clear (to me) that that was the main reason he was hired.
Seemed like kind of a weak joke. I think the place broke into hysterics because they were all being "yes men" to Chappelle. not that he didn't earn that
Down vote all you want... the flake ran to Africa and people were counting on him. Or was he "being real"? He got annoyed he was famous. Hey asshole... you see those cameras your in front of??? What... he didn't want to be famous? Then why didn't he stay in some dank club?
I've never seen a box of skittles that looked like three dirty whores.
Also, I really don't think a box of skittles would cause a man to balloon over 300 lbs.
I'm sorry, I just cannot suspend disbelief enough to get down on the floor and roll around laughing. But then, no one is paying me to.
I'm afraid to say it but I agree. I don't know Chappelle's comedy like you all seem to but I didn't think that scene was funny. It's great seeing Patrice in things forever but it didn't make me laugh.

It was Bill Burr laughing inappropriately behind the camera that caused Chappelle to cancel his show.
-19 rickygri 2015-12-12
I doubt it, was prob the main guy he wrote Chapelles show with

What bit? I heard he didn't like when some white person laughed too hard at one of his skits so he flipped and thought he was making a racist show

I don't think it was becoming a minstrel show. He was just too sensitive about the money and fame he was receiving.

I've heard part of it was Farrakhan telling him "you're playing the fool" and putting down the black race.

I think you're right about Louie being an artist. The pure artistry in the "eat a bag of dicks" routine is incredible.
9 rahtin 2015-12-12
People are just upset because Louie has gained so much mainstream acceptance. It's like metal fans whenever a band they know gets a song on the radio.

Well all that and allegedly being an aggressive public mastubating sexual predator made me take a step back from Louie.
7 TijnTijn 2015-12-12
The same goes for his show. The first two seasons were great after that it went from cringe humor to him just was trying to make short indie films.

Chappelle had a bit on the Kramer fiasco about how he felt worst as a comedian for watching a peer bombing on stage then he did as a black man.
