History of Bob Kelly's YKWD Podcast
59 2015-12-06 by [deleted]
Bawby's podcast has always been hit or miss, but going back through the archives a few weeks ago, I remembers all the changes it's gone through. I thought I'd write something up for you guys while on Ritalin instead of doing what I should be doing, which is building a website for my boss. For anyone who wants to check out some of the old episodes, I think this will help:
http://robertkelly.libsyn.com/
There have been 4 stages to the YKWD podcast:
1. The iPhone Era
Time Period: April 2010 - July 2011
This was the very early days of the podcast when Bobby just recorded it into his iPhone while on the road whenever he felt like it, and sometimes had a guest he would have a lazy, casual conversation with. I believe you could only get it on iTunes.
This was a continuation of the Bob Kelly and Sometimes Colin Quinn podcast, except it was always Bob and almost never Colin.
Best episode: Me and Colin Quinn - Part 1 - Colin talks Long Story Short.
Bawby tells a funny story about shouting at hecklers starting at around 5:00- it's probably a lie.
Some notable features of this era include terrible sound quality and hearing Bobby's Apple OS beeping during the podcast. Near the end Joe Derosa started appearing on the podcast more and more.
2. The Joey Roses Era
Time Period: July 2011 - March 2012
Bob buys real podcast equipment, mics, production value, Joe Derosa becomes the permanent cohost, and Bob starts The Glory Hole Radio network with Rob Sprance, which later becomes known as Riotcast. This is when Bob gets serious about podcasting. Bawby also starts producing them on a regular, consistent schedule.
When Bob and Joe have another comic on they clicked on at the same time, to me this was the perfect podcast. Near the end of this era Bobby starts getting a young open micer named Monstervoice on more and more as third or second mic, also known as Dan Soder. This is when we first met future superstars Fat Kelly, Bailey Jay, Joe List and Luis J. Gomez
Dan Soder - First appearance October 2011
Bailey Jay - First appearance November 2011
Luis J. Gomez - First apperance January 2012
Kelly Fastuca - First appearance March 2012
Joe List- First appearance April 2012
This era ended when Joe Derosa moved away from New York because his mom was sick, and because Joe and Bob were fighting a lot, in one particular episode that was never released. His goodbye episode is here.
Best episode: KWR and Dangerous Joe - Bawby, Dan, and Keith Robinson smash Dangerous Joe Derosa
3. The Kelly Era
Time Period: March 2012 - ~2014
After Joey leaves Kelly and Dan are Bob's new permanent cohosts, and this starts the era of having 7 people in-studio at once talking over each other. A lot of people shit on this era, saying it killed the podcast, but the truth is it was mostly good comics who fit in and had good chemmus-chree. Joe List, Luis J Gomez, Kelly Fastuca getting smashed, Soder, Yannis, etc. All good comics. Also Chris Scopo was there.
Best episode: Das It! - CQ contends with Mauricia- Yannis Pappa's sassy latina alter-ego.
I'm not sure when this era ended exactly, but Kelly leaving in August 2014 and Luis J. Gomez, Joe List, and Dan Soder getting more popular with other projects and podcasts and getting too busy to do it regularly probably did it. I guess the show passed them by. sniff
This was when they started to have regular live broadcasts, livestreams with the chat became more prominent, live-stand-up shows, and Dan's stand-up career started to blow up. This era was like a petri dish for comedy. The shows started to get too long and have too many people on at once in my opinion, and it was always a crapshoot who would show up and what would happen. Kelly and Luis's fights started to get more vicious, and Kelly left partly because of Luis. Which led to:
4. YKWD Today
Time Period: ~2014 - now
It's a lot of people talking at once, and usually not regulars anymore. If you get one of the old gang in with Bob it can work, but mostly the podcast has open-micers and newbies on, and there's less chemistreee. PERIOD.
Maybe some of the "new" regulars on this show have the potential to become breakout stars, but I don't see it yet, although to be fair I don't listen much anymore.
Best episode: YKWD Live from the Village Underground - Reunion live episode with Soder, Kelly, Luis and Joe List, featuring Dan's SNL edition.
Hopefully Bawby can pull it together and get back to the old days- a permanent co-host and 4 people on, max.
I fucking hate Ritalin tbh fam smh

Bobby, Soder, List, Gomez, Fastuca era was absolute gold and it really peaked around those Yannis episodes. Another 5 star episode was "Welcome to America, let me smell your cunt".

The recent YKWD Live got my interest, and I've been going back looking for episodes with Soder and List. Which Yannis episodes are you referring to?

I love YKWD. People give it a lot of shit and the criticism isn't unfair, but Bobby's intentions aren't bad. He just wants to give young comics a platform to be heard and get their names out there. That's why there's different guests every week. With the right group of regulars (Luis, Dan, Joe, Jay, etc.) it's right on par with old school O&A

And he's lovably fat! (Seriously though, he needs to lose some weight)
8 JMueller2012 2015-12-06
'Lil bit. A 'lil bit.
2 xxmikekxx 2015-12-06
Hopefully he'll lose weight to be the funny fat dude again. Instead of the "I'm really worried about him" fat dude

Been waiting for a post like this for a while!

OP is above subpar.

Give a special mention to the worst, not only episode of YKWD, but the worst podcast ever recorded. The Cigar episode taped in his backyard. I didn't make it through the whole thing but every sentence Bobby uses either the word "bat" or "stick" to refer to a cigar & it is infuriating.
Then he has the most unfunny man in the world Paul Virzi there. This is a real sentence Paul Virzi says on that podcast "when you have a cigar & a Diet Coke..it's crazy"
5 Smokegreentrees 2015-12-06
I like to smoke a bat! oh dats cool I call them sticks. Your both smoking dicks.
1 SteakSauce66 2015-12-06
Big brown fucking dicks!

It's as if Bob's career is getting more and more miserable and he needs more people around in his life.

Good job, my favorite was always the Kelly Era.
-1 I_Hate_Knickers 2015-12-06
The whole thing is the Kelly era.
7 bowserjrjr 2015-12-06
Dude there's one story I heard on YWTD, I think it's the Colin episode. Bobby talks about how they all got back from Iraq or something, and after spending a week together Norton leaves the airport without saying goodbye or something like that, shit was funny as hell.

link?

Sounds like the quality follows his fat schedule. Worse when Fat Bobby, better when Stupid Sexy Bobby.
3 [deleted] 2015-12-06
but the 2013 era of YKWD was Fat Bobby. Bobby has been fat since 2010.
5 JMueller2012 2015-12-06
My personal favorite is The A-Hole Proffesor. Dan is on FIRE the whole episode
0 I_Hate_Knickers 2015-12-06
Tsss...yeah maybe someone should tell the firemen or sumpthin
5 CCRed95 2015-12-06
I dont know why ive never tried listening to YKWD, i should.
2 racemic_mixture 2015-12-06
Search for soder / list episodes, they are always good.
1 PigsArePunished 2015-12-06
Current episodes are a joyless chore to listen to, but 2012-2014 was easily as good as LoS or Race Wars is today.
0 I_Hate_Knickers 2015-12-06
You know why, so do I. We just can't say it on this thread.
-3 jonnybbbboy 2015-12-06
No, you should'nt. Bob kellys podcast is absolute shit. One of the unfunniest comedians i've ever heard.
5 mattirawks 2015-12-06
Good write up. I was a listener of Bob's stuff from day one and really enjoyed it. The Derosa era was great! Bobs wife would be cooking up some food in the background whilst those 2 would chain smoke throughout the entire podcast telling some good stories ....The Soder/Fastuca era was also good.....now it's just awful, and Bobs never listened to the criticism of too many people at once......did enjoy the reunion show tho.
5 [deleted] 2015-12-06
Too bad the current podcast is unlistenable dreck outside of special reunion episodes.
He doesn't seem to realize that seven random open mic comics talking over each other, in-between his boring domestic stories and ego-trips aren't funny or interesting.

INFINITE MONKEYS THEOREM!! Filling the time with CONSTANT SPEAKING is bound at some POINT to pay off in a BIG WAY!! Maybe not TODAY. Maybe not TOMORROW. But someday...
4 ScoliOpie 2015-12-06
Bawby's podcast was cool. Now that they have that new slit who brags about being married and slut just ruined it for me.
6 xyniphis 2015-12-06
She's terrible
4 [deleted] 2015-12-06
the 2012-early 2014 era was the best comedy podcast ever imo. Bobby, Soder, Luis, and List killing it. Great chemistry. Fastuca was annoying sometimes but a great punching bag. Yannis was in regularly and he was good. Other guys would stop by, like Big Jay and Metzger and that was always great. YKWD is way past its prime and I think even Bobby knows that.

History if Bob Kelly's podcast
He started out around 260lb. Then he got up to 280. Then down to 240! Then up to 310. Then 320. Then no sugar no grain to 285. Then 320. Now today he's 335.
Hope that helps
3 PhilipMarma 2015-12-06
Very well done. Excellent breakdown.

I wish I had some adderall.
2 BoboOrban6 2015-12-06
Never tried it, but heard it's better than shitty Ritalin.
2 CCRed95 2015-12-06
Nothing will ever beat ritalin. My nasal passages are like twice as wide as thwy should be... ive been taking it sublingually lately, you should try it. Its like a new high
1 iced_semen 2015-12-06
I haven't really used either of them very much but in my experience adderall was a lot better.
0 I_Hate_Knickers 2015-12-06
Tsss...yeah why not minusersome or sumpthin
2 RearNakedGrope 2015-12-06
Just smoke meth like a man.
2 Smokegreentrees 2015-12-06
The Soder Era was great.
2 TayNez 2015-12-06
People still take Ritalin? I thought everyone took Adderall nowadays.
1 BoboOrban6 2015-12-06
I have no idea where to get Adderall.
1 TayNez 2015-12-06
That's surprising. Shit is being prescribed like candy. Moreso than Ritalin.
2 RonsCigar 2015-12-06
Thanks for this fella
2 white_hispanic 2015-12-06
The first episode when dan brought kelly on was really funny. Robert hated her accent so much, probably still does.
2 braunheiser 2015-12-06
Thanks I loved this post... going to look into these episodes.. has Jim ever done a podcast with Bobby in his stage 4 era when the studio looks like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryV-CIBzSBw
I would love to see Norton on there, or Ronnie B, or even Anthony
2 Anarox 2015-12-06
You forgot something, there was a show called
"Robert kelly and sometimes Colin Quinn podcast" where basicily bob would call CQ and they would fight about stuff, CQ would vent his frustration out on the world and shit, it was funny as fuck, but I don't know where to find it anymore
2 SpaceOctagon 2015-12-06
The best period was when it was Bobby, Soder, and DeRosa. It was also great when it was just Bobby and Joe. After that when DeRosa left and they got the studio is when it started to go downhill. Soder, List, and Gomez being on regularly was pretty great. Some funny repeat guests like Yannis and Nate were good. Kelly was always awful. The only good thing about her was everyone shitting on her. She was an easily unlikable person. Painfully unfunny and only there because she looked OK (at the time) and was not terrible at doing basic work like booking guests and buying coffee. And things went even worse after Kelly left. Gomez was basically banished, Soder got big and rarely came on, and Scopo and the indian took a much bigger role on the show. Bobby used to have too many guests on sometimes but now every show is a cacophony of unknown, unfunny "comics". I deleted the YKWD rss a while ago. The "reunion" show was pretty good but that's not the norm anymore.
As a side I really got tired of Bobby talking about food, nutrition and health like he had a clue about any of it. His diets are just fad shit. Forget "no sugar no grains duuude" and just fucking eat less and exercise. Calories in, calories out. That's fucking it.
