Uhh hello? Hide a GIANT audience during the WNEW days. Got fired (On PURPOSE by the way) to work for XM and did VERY well there.

Had millions of fans until they were manipulated into the show passing them by. I don't understand this, I don't understand where this is FUCKING coming from.

Agreed with the OP and this could be its own topic but here is pretty much the truth behind everything:

-Opie and Anthony won a monster contract, support, investment and cash + fairly solid job security because of Howard Stern.

No seriously. O&A are there for when the company negotiates with Howard Stern. That's business. They are there so the company (and Howard knows) that they do have a potential replacement.

They don't even have to be a full replacement but just X-Million dollars worth of Howard-holdout replacement.

Not only that but just enough to be some kind of potential motivation to keep Howard working and trying at any rate.

My old boss used to do the same thing on smaller scales. Fact is, he had a very good guy making the company good money BUT that guy damn well knew it and was becoming a fucking problem demanding anything and everything including insanely high salary increases.

I was not actually required in terms of some labor demand. I dont even think the boss liked me. I wasn't necessary. I wasn't actually going to replace the arrogant bigshot employee but..

..I was paid a pretty good salary to be there SO THAT and BECAUSE OF the negotiating power. I was 3/4s of the bigshot. It made Bigshot fucker suddenly get a little less demanding. It also kept a little fire under his ass to KEEP being #1 hotshot.

IF I was Opie and didn't understand what I was being used for I could have started thinking "wow Im catching up on #1 dude" and telling people "Trussssst me I know this fuckn' business..period!".

I worked there for years and years as long as super-employee did and interestingly, when he finally left the company the first thing they did was hire a 'New Me'. Hence I could not walk in there saying 'Guess what fuckers.. you want me you pay bigtime!'.

Opie didn't get there because he's a radio genius. He got there because he copied Howard Stern jusssst enough to be useful as Howard Stern negotiation tools.

I have to agree with you. I always thought he stunk almost from the start when I first started listening during the XM days. I had no knowledge of the WNEW or WBAB days beforehand. I found the Tony Danza bit on Youtube and that sparked my curiosity to get a XM free trial online and listen to the show that it came from. Once I realized that Jim Norton was apart of the show (who I really liked from Tough Crowd) I was (AHEM..) ALL IN!

I would listen and conituously ask myself.. "Why is he there?"
