Its typical misdirection. If you cant argue the issue at hand then argue a point or semantics. Jim and Opie cant handle the criticism, especially when its true and indefensible, so they invalidate the issue by arguing tangent points. They want to frame it as the righteous superiors vs the anonymous "hater" to weasel out of facing reality. Above all else REAL.

The same reason any celebrity or reasonably-known personality does: people can hit you, you can't hit back. Jimmy uses it as a fallback argument too often, but I can see why it would be irritating.
