I think it's because the Republicans are really in the limelight right now. There are a bakers dozen candidates and they are all trying to stand out. With all the media and debates that they are doing, they have more material out there to make fun of.
On the democratic side there isn't a lot to goof on. They spent time on Bernie sanders when those black women pushed him away from the podium. Hillary is just occupying space so there isn't much to say. Who else is there to goof on? Jim Webb or Lincoln Chaffee?
The Republicans are the ones right now that are really trying to get attention and they keep saying cringey stuff that's easy fodder.
The democrats have Joe Biden, he is probably the easiest politician to make fun of but it rarely happens. I'll be disappointed if South Park doesn't make fun of him for being a creepy motherfucker.
It's what mainstream, corporate comedy does—and has done for all of our lifetimes (unless there are any geezers here who remember pre-Eisenhower days).
There are other reasons some comics go after the designated safe target, but licking ass is #1.
Opie's too dumb to have any opinions but it's probably partially him appealing to his 'new audience'. But eh, reality show wig, brain surgeon that thinks an invisible evil monster came up with evolution, and regular joe fat guy in a baseball uniform. They're better fodder than the disheveled socialist and the lying cunt.
