I've loudly "hated" Opie on this sub since the firing. Truth is, both times I met him (pre-firing) he was really nice. He spoke with me and my group, asked me sports questions (I was wearing a Rangers hat - he's and Islanders fan), gladly took pictures with us, etc.
If he was as genuine on-air as he was when we met him off-air, he'd be completely likable to the fans. He just can't help himself, he needs to be edgy/douchebag/angry guy - and that just isn't him. It worked when Anthony could keep him in check - now it's just complete mayhem.
