But 217 people, for example, voting up on a video all at once that's on /r/new can make it reach the front page. Reddit's algorithm works so that the earliest votes count for more than the later votes. So getting initial upvotes on a video is critical to getting it to the front page.

I kept an eye on that video as soon as that guy submitted it to /r/videos, the ratio was like 90% upvoted for the entire time it was on /r/new, that's much higher than normal. 200 people all pressing up on a video on /r/new can absolutely make or break it. It's like starting an avalanche.
