If Opie didn't have a nickname he would be out of a job.

Everyone who has heard of Opie and Anthony are able to identify the show based on that "Opie" name and associate that with all the success they had. If Opie actually had the name Anthony, he wouldn't have been able to build the "Opie Radio" brand after Ant's firing and now everyone who sees or hears that brand associates it with the success of O&A. Opie is able to have a job based on a brand, not any talent he has. And he has tits.

I honestly believe his recognizable radio name is 90% of why he was kept for so long.

Opie's sole purpose on the show was a search query to find O&A stuff easier online.

I've never heard a more perfect encapsulation of a man.

1) Opie Radio was already a brand before the firing... He just named the channel the same as his YouTube, Instagram, etc.
2) Opie has a shitty nickname and he'll be out of a job when his contract expires

When I first started listening in '11 I thought ant was opie and opie was "anthony" just cuz I figured the funny guy's name would come first in the title. I have been schooled in more ways than one

Same here. There was this guy who enunciated his words, didn't belch, made jokes, and didn't go off on tangents like mispronouncing "milk" or pronouncing the "p" in pneumonia for comedic effect. That must be the guy with top billing. It confused the shit out of me.

you kidding? when he says the p in pneumonia I HOWL

Yeah my first month or so of listening to the show was filled with confusion.

He learned from the best: Brother Wease. Or as nobody knows him: his real name. Ant and Jimmy walked on Greggshells for years not being able to call out the fact that using a wacky radio name is hack as fuck because they were sitting next to a talentless fag who goes by "Opie" but pretends he had no say in the matter because he kinda looked like the kid from Andy Griffith when he was 10.

ME: It was a stupid nickname I got when I was a kid OK DUMBASS. sniff I'm stuck with this DUMB name. burp

ME: I don't even like the name people have been calling me it since I was a kid
Random celebrity: Hey I'm celebrity face what's your name?
ME: Hurrrr durrrr I'm Opie

Of course this is true. That is why Gregg Hughes often complained about the "Opie" name, but wouldn't dare reinvent himself by hosting "The Gregg Hughes Show".
If Sirius fired him, he would probably be picked up somewhere, based on the value of the name. Some clueless program director would think that "Opie" actually carries weight with old O&A fans and he would have an audience doing mornings for some generic rock station. And it would be called "Opie in the Morning" or something, not "The Gregg Hughes Rock N Roll Eye Opener".

Terrestrial radio is all but dead at this point except for the burbs maybe. Okie would have to move.

Agreed, he should be thankful for us for labeling him "Tits".

Opie is hellva lot better than his CB handle "Diamond Dust." What a Mo.

Wrangler to Dream Weaver. You got your ears on?

Let's not forget that "Flying Fingers" Brother Joe and "Paisano Cowboy" Joe Sr. weren't the best CB handles either.

I forgot about Flying Fingers. At least they were kids at the time.

If Opie didn't have Jimmy he would be Jenny Hutt.

Well that's what he's living on, the rapidly declining amount of the loyal listeners. He hope he can still keep a few because he thinks they enjoy his "interesting" opinions. Plus he still has that worm to kinda trick fans in to listening because he was funny. It's ok, I can't wait for this sorry excuse of a show to die and hopefully something good comes out of this.

I mean, this is a dumb statement. If their show had the same level of success as it did under the name The Gregg & Anthony show, instead of it being OpieRadio, it would be The Gregg Hughes show now. Same shit.

I dont know though. Im in chicago, so ive never met anyone who has heard of O&A (also im 20, so no one likes radio now anyways, they have to be watching something). Ive never told my friends to listen to the show solely because of the name of it
-3 Imronideutch 2015-10-27
I was never a huge Opie fan, but I have to say if he wasn't there the show would have had ZERO structure and when you had a room full of comedians and guests it would have become everyone talking over each other. So while I didn't and still don't like Opie as a "radio personality" he was good behind the scenes and keeping the show rolling for so long.

You could hardly be less correct on any of those points. Go listen to some Nopie shows.
1 panjshirlion 2015-10-27
I'm amazed that the ship-steerer argument is still being floated around with the Nopie collection existing as a living counterexample.
