Reading and writing. I plan on finishing On Writing by Stephen King tomorrow, and I got a copy of Infinite Jest early this week that I plan on really sinking my teeth into, see what all the hubbub is about. I've also gotta get a rough draft of a story together, but I doubt I'll get to it until the day before its due.
Infinite Jest is my favorite book of all time. Its a really funny book as well as fucking depressing and batshit crazy. Dont give up on it, it may seem to lag for a bit but everything is in there for a reason and it all comes together quite nicely.
I was like you and tried it out bc of all the hubbub, before that i thought DFW and his fans were the biggest group of pretentious hipster assholes, but after reading it i realized that DFW is an absolute genius and its just the Post mortem DFW worshipers who are the jerkoffs. I love writing too and Infinite Jest deff changed the way I write, read and take in the world around me in general. Im halfway through my 3rd go around reading it, this time on audiobook. As soon as i finished the first time i started right back up at page 1 to try to grasp the story/ending more. Also check out some more of DFWs work, i personally think IJ wasnt even his best work, he really shined the most doing Journalism/Non-fiction writing. His collections of short stories/non fiction articles are great. "Consider The Lobster" and "A Supposedly Fun Thing Ill Never Do Again".
And ill say the name is very important when it comes to understanding the book. Its a Shakespeare quote first and foremost, (From Hamlet, which the whole story is loosely based on) but the phrase Infinite Jest really describes the book itself in a really great way. Good luck on everything reading and writing wise and I hope u enjoy it as much as I did.
Yes, very much. I have yet to undertake the gigantic task that is Gravity's Rainbow but ive heard it compared to IJ so much that im really excited to start it just waiting for enough free time where i can dedicate enough time and head space to it. The Crying Of Lot 49 is fucking superb, ive read it twice. Also Im a big PTA fan so i read Inherent Vice to prep myself for the film and I loved the book alot more than the film, although I didnt think the movie was as bad as alot of critics thought. I have Gravitys Rainbow next on my "To read list" and also Vineland, which Ive heard alot of good things about as well.
I'm only about 40 pages in, so I don't have much of an opinion yet. I plan on seeing this through to the end though. I've read Ulysses twice, I think I have the patience for IJ.
You've already read what alot of people consider to be the best/most interesting part although you dont know why yet. And knowing Ulysses will help you out alot because its based in part on Ulysses/The Odyssey/Hamlet. Although theres at least 1 word on every page youll prob need a dictionary for because of DFW's otherworldly vocabulary, i consider IJ alot more of an easier read than Ulysses. I never finished that because I just felt frustrated not fully understanding the slang of the Irish in the early 1900's. I wish I had read it in school or had someone familiar with the story to help me through it bc obviously everyone considers it the GOAT but i just had trouble comprehending almost everything that was said.
You're spot on about needing a dictionary every other page. I don't mind though; its a new word to add to my vocabulary. Ulysses is impossible to read without some kind of guide. Ulysses: Annotated is usually the go to but a site like Spark Notes or Shmoop would serve well enough if its your first time. It also helps to have read Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man before. I'd give it another shot; it really is an amazing book.
Cool shit, man. You got any recommendations for some good books? Im always looking for new stuff and anyone on this looneybin of a sub must have read a fucked up gem or 2 he'd bd willing ti bestow on me
The thing that bugs me about his fiction is that a lot of times he writes himself into a corner and the ending ends up being fucking garbage, e.g. The Dark Tower, The Stand, etc.
Gotta love it, I just retired from CSEA with 7 years of subpar, sometimes sober service. I got paid to drive around a college campus and stare at Asian asses (sometimes it's hard to tell the sex from behind, they all have similar haircuts and skinny jeans confuse me)
I operated heavy equipment, did paving, excavation, water-main breaks. Basically dug holes and filled them in, and plowed snow in the winter time. "Plowing snow" was the greatest, it was usually 7 hours of watching movies then doing a few laps around campus splashing nasty slush on drunk chicks walking home from getting fucked. Or if it was a decent snowfall, burying some 18 year old douchey frat-boys BMW Z in a mountain of snow was always entertaining.
I drive heavy machinery. I am dry and warm while other assholes are out in the elements. Seniority rules. Stick with it awhile it gets fucking easy. You kill yourself establishing your position, no doubt.
I'm lucky I had a cool boss who liked me, and found me funny. I busted my ass as the guy down in the hole with a shovel for a couple years, then someone younger comes along and boom guess who's in the climate controlled, extremely expensive equipment with little-to-no training. I just quit at 30 with a solid 18k in retirement i can cash out to move back to Baltimore, I heard they have a CVS that needs rebuilding, so I know there's work there.
Well gang, it's actually my birthday on sunday, thanks in advance for the kind words :) ... My mom offered to bake me a cake, i'm assuming because she thinks i'm gay. I said i'd prefer a tray of halupkis, so I plan on eating the entire tray and drinking around 18 cans of Labatts. I assume the combination will result in me shitting blood, but it's my special day, i'm so excited gang!
Finally screenprint some shirts I've been meaning to make for weeks to sell on the ecigclassifieds sub. Late night call a ho, unless she gets mad that I'm only booty calling her and don't want to go out on a "date" then I'll just jerk off to some mmf porn. Maybe try to beat Ninja Gaiden 3 on the nes emulator. And lots and lots of weed and pills.
I liked that you used the word try. I've been futzing around with an NES emulaltor on my 3DS recently. I've been playing the Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden series and frankly I don't see how anyone ever beat these games without save states.
Holy shit. I skipped the nes, snes, and sega era of gaiming. But recently downloaded emulators and the whole libraries for all the games, over 2000 games, lol and got a super nintendo controller for windows off ebay. ANd oh my fuck are those games hard. It's frustrating as shit, but rewarding as hell when you get just a little further. and yea I can imagine how many controllers and games were smashed back then without save states.
Make like a fake "Missing" poster with their faces on it, and have like "Last seen June 28, 2014" (or whatever their last show together was) as the shirt. Maybe.
Anyone gonna watch Hell in a Cell? The card looks like utter shit to me. Taker/Lesnar in a cell was great ten years but I doubt they'll get anywhere close to that this time around.
We're expecting between 7-10" of rain this entire weekend here in TX. Depending on the weather, I may see Madball tonight, or sit in my local pub drinking Lonestar and whiskey until I black out.
It's been raining like crazy here, I live just outside Ft. Worth. I'm hoping my garage doesn't get flooded again. That's where I keep my bookshelves....
Yep, I'm in South Dallas so I've been getting blasted. Local streets are flooded from time to time but overall it hasn't been too bad. I was GOING to go to Fort Worth for that Madball show tonight, but it's just too long a drive in too unpredictable weather for my tastes.
Work on the websites for the radio station I volunteer at (without getting paid for my incredible work. Built 3 websites that are mobile friendly, SEO'd the fuck out of them so our radio station shows up on page 1 of various Google searches involving radio).
Binge watching "The Shield". Was too far behind on it to really watch attentively when it was on air but ive heard so many good things and saw all 7 seasons at Wal-Mart for like 25$ so i had to buy it.
When I got by first flat screen last year I was like "wtf, I can't tell the difference." I didn't realize you had to switch from coaxial to HDMI, so for about six months I was still watching shitty quality TV, maybe worse than before. I'm stupid.
Infinite Jest is my favorite book of all time. Its a really funny book as well as fucking depressing and batshit crazy. Dont give up on it, it may seem to lag for a bit but everything is in there for a reason and it all comes together quite nicely.
