Jim Norton is not a smart man. Most adults who listen to the show have the same reaction. The show can be entertaining when it doesn't take itself seriously but anyone with any life experience and a formal education will get frustrated. Norton actually thinks that watching YouTube videos is a substitute for a formal academic education. Unfortunately as you've found out, you can't discuss this seriously with his fans, because they get extremely defensive. According to them, Norton is a qualified doctor, chemist, comic genius, actor, anthropologist, archeologist, and nutritionist. It's endearing in a way, it's just how small children see their parents as knowing everything. Who didn't think that their parents knew everything when they were young? It's only as you mature yourself that you can start to see the gaps in their knowledge. Most other people can see that in Jim though. Stumbles over basic terms, shows a clear lack of understanding of research methods, a laughable grasp of sources, a child-like understanding of academia in general. It can be as frustrating as it is entertaining.

A lot of his fans do come around though. Usually once they have actually finished their university courses (those that haven't dropped out) end up understanding, because they become proficient in a field themselves, and then the thought of a YouTube Academic really gets under their skin because they know that their years of hard work can't be duplicated with a 5 minute clip. Give them time. It's why our numbers continue to grow.
