Stationary camera + talking guy behind the desk format sucks

23  2015-10-13 by aftershave

I know I'm not breaking any new ground here, but why do Anthony or Gavin think this format is entertaining? This is a relic from the past and has zero entertainment value. Who has the time to look at a guy talk for hours behind a desk?

It's even more puzzling with Gavin because he supposedly co-founded VICE, an overwhelmingly field-based, multi-angle, fast-pasted documentary outlet.

It's public access in 4K. Anthony is funny sometimes, but he's a dumbfuck businessman.

P.S. VICE today has a $2.5 Billion dollar valuation. Gavin is reduced to ranting in some dude's basement to ~100 subscribers. Count your blessings.

P.P.S. Tits is still Hitler.

The show would be better with a Redlettermedia Half In The Bag-style style set-up. One long shot, two close-ups, cutting in between. You could have Rat or Stinky live directing the thing the whole time, with only three cameras it wouldn't be that hard once you figure out the rhythm of it.

half in the bag.. FUCK movies :-)

I'd love to see "Third Reich" Mike on TACS.

Why. Things are going good for him. Why ruin it by going on a shitty public access show.

Yeah, I tend to agree with you. I was hoping for a lot more with the NYC studio. I don't know why he went with a Johnny Carsonesque talk show setup, that's just weird. You can have the video incorporated and not have to stare into the thing all fucking day. It needs to have more of a radio show vibe. He also needs a cohost. I don't really give a shit who it is at this point, just someone to bounce shit off of. Ant is at his best just sitting around riffing, not playing television entertainer. And for fucks sake change that fucking abomination of a goddamn background. I do think the setup works just fine for Gavin.

Supposedly co-founded VICE? He did Co-found vice. He still made a fuck load of money from the vice venture. No where near what Shane Smith has made tho.

When Gavin left VICE it was a rag-tag operation that focused on alt-culture oddities. The current version of VICE is nothing like the one Gavin left behind. It's more of a media empire that's worth more than NY Times and Washington Post put together. I'm not shitting on the guy, but when he takes credit for VICE today is similar to Steve Wozniak taking credit for Apple. He had nothing to do with company's success for over 2 decades.

Gavin walked away from a mom-and-pop operation and didn't retain any equity. Just got bought out for a few million and lucked out.

You're wrong about your idea of Wozniak and Gavin, they may not have been there when the product peaked, but they did create the product. I'm not an Apple fanboy, but it has always been about a user friendly product, Wozniak was there at the beginning when that idea became part of its institution. Gavin was also there when the initial idea of vice was constructed, it's still a counter culture news source aimed at a younger generation of people.

Good points, even though I disagree about Wozniak's role in shaping Apple in any way. He was an extremely talented engineer but his legacy did not survive his departure. Apple went to shit after Woz left and Steve Jobs was fired by the board. The Apple of today is Steve Jobs' creation, including the engineering/industrial design they're known for, on account of him betting on the right horse (Jony Ive & co.)

Woz was a super talented guy. And maybe Gavin is too, but they lack vision. I guess that makes Shane Smith the Steve Jobs of VICE?

Either way, the desk thing fucking blows. No one has the time to stare at a sitting guy for 2 hours.

Yea but Wozniak didn't leave before it became valuable. He made out pretty well and is very respected by the business world. Gavin is like one of the guys that worked with them in the beginning but quit before anyone knew who they were and went insane trying to tell people he was really the one that invented the Ipad.

Woz isn't respected by the business world. He's more just a nerd icon at this point.

I just looked up his net worth. 100 million. Jobs was at 11 billion. I retract what I said.

He's basically a lovable goofball. I think he was involved in some startup recently but it didn't sound very successful.

Probably not. I can't imagine how upset I would be with my life if I invented computers and only made $100m. I can't even describe how insane I would be with regret and self-loathing.

Have you seen him? Dude is clearly more worried about playing Magic The Gathering and reading Harry Potter than money.

Yea. Idk anything about those those. I would just use it as a way to hate myself more. He clearly does not have the same disdain for his existence.

No one in history gets more undeserved praise than wozniak. He has nothing to do with any of the choices that made apple successful. He didn't even have any input on the original macintosh ffs.

I know the story, and it was not a rag tag operation at the time. All I'm saying is he made enough money.

VICE was hardly rag tag when Gavin left. It wasnt what it is today, it was somewhere in between. And he had everything to do with its success. He is one of three founders. No way is it worth more than two of the biggest newspapers in the country.

Here you go https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CPfjgJEUwAAYBO9.png

Jesus, I stand corrected. That is surprising. I am sorry for doubting you sir.

No worries. We all come here to learn and bro out

Rock em, breaux

And gay sex please

This kind of scares me. While we all know newspapers have biases, they still have a responsibility to report facts and details to get both sides to buy them. VICE can just make shit up and tell people whatever they want and it is viewed as being true by today's new media society while pocketing HBO and liberal tech money.

idk man, take syria for instance, when they have embedded reports with Daesh, YPG, Iranian-backed Shiite militias, and government forces, as well as reporters on the ground with groups affected (like Yazidis), and they really don't insert much tilt one way or the other, they just let the people spout whatever they want to spout, then that's pretty fucking balanced reporting.

But that doesn't help anyone make sense of anything. It is just people saying shit. Balanced reporting is taking both sides and making it into a fact based story people will feel informed about. Giving both sides the forum to lie is not helping anyone.

it certainly does, definitely more than relying upon the interviewer/reporter/station to agglomerate information and tell you what's going on. if you can't watch multiple on the ground reports from conflicting sources and make sense of what's going on then that just means you haven't done any research and don't have enough information to make sense of it yourself.

That's the whole point. The fact that anyone has to do their own research afterwards tells you how useless the reporting was. Having multiple conflicting reports within the same story from the same news source is not functional information. I am watching the report because I don't know what is going on, it is their job to explain what is happening. 90% of their stories end with the reporter saying "I don't know what I learned here. Both sides are convincing. All I know is it's fucked up." Thaaaaaaaaaanks.

fair enough, but you won't get any useful reporting from any "normal" media outlets. and Vice doesn't combine conflicting reports in the same story, they do 20-odd minute minidocumentrees that are self contained. plus whatever, their footage is fucking badass to watch and no one else is doing anything close to it unless you are watching some Russian outlets like ANNA, which are even more biased than most of our shit

not trying to be a dick, but if you already have a general idea of what's happening, then the actual reports that Vice produces are much more valuable than any synopsis that can just report the "facts" that they want from all sides

If you already have a general idea of what's happening than you already know more than the report vice is going to give you.

for the most part, but there's also some value to be gained from watching liveleak videos of Russian airstrikes in Syria or some shit like that. knowing what's going on from reading is different from seeing it actually happen.

Yes. I agree. But that is not passed off as journalism.

they are recording what is happening around them and reporting it to an audience. you don't need to explain everything to the audience to qualify the "work" as journalism, and you don't need put a spin on it either. just depends on what you like, and not having to listen to some jackass explain to me what the difference between Sunni and Shia are while he's talking over badass war footage is the kind of "journalism" I like I guess. whatever, cheers sir

They aren't reporting anything. Just confirming things we already knew. It takes no talent or skill to do what they do, just a plane ticket and a hipsters sense of personal security. Meh, who cares. Enjoy. Whatever, cheers.

Adding a video element to TACS was a mistake. Too many awkward seconds with Anthony trying to make a funny face or showing off his horse-chompers to gold digging whores. When audio is all you have, you tend to give it with more rapid fire.

and he looks like a fucking bum in a mediocre suit

The show could stand to gain from more natural lighting and Ant wearing a hat. Fox News Ant stinks. I miss Hardcore Gamer Ant.

I hate to say it but Tits actually has a really nice video setup for his show. They use a DSLR and a couple of stationary cameras and jump between shots. It looks really natural and not like some Fox news talking heads bullshit.

he supposedly co-founded VICE

Why'd you use "supposedly" when one google search will tell you that he did.

Gavin is reduced to ranting in some dude's basement to ~100 subscribers. Count your blessings.

Gavin founded VICE with Suroosh Alvi back in the early 90's, they brought in Shane Smith to help out when they started to blow up. Shane Smith ended up staying with them, and if I'm not mistaken both Gavin and Smith had some kind of outing and Gavin left.

Gavin has a lot of fuck you money, so he's just basically coasting through life doing whatever he wants now.

Are you telling me that the late night talk show setup is not the cutting edge of what these kids want to see these days?

someone posted the artie Lange show clip that set looks so much better

Gotta keep it lookin professional. I would rather listen that watch any day. Unless there's some big fawkin tits!

you're forgetting that most talk shows on tv follow this format to some degree, weekend update, daily show, last week tonight...etc;

i would bet that over time, once the show picks up a bit, that we will see more camera angles and physical cameraman, not just stationary camera controlled by rat.

It works for Gavin though, it just doesn't for Ant. Why the f the pissy race obsessed Twitter nerd crater face thinks he can be Johnny Carson is beyond me. I shat upon Ant's old theme music for sounding like generic beer commercial cock rock, but the new selection just puzzles me.

As for Gavin, I wasn't familiar with him before his Anthony appearances, but searching him on YouTube, he's done a lot of other types of videos, some which have 1/3 million views, so I don't think it's fair to say his audience is isolated to Anthony's leftover O&A nerdfans.

Fairly certain he's loaded and doing this mostly for his own satisfaction.

Didn't he not get any money from vice? What's the story there ?
