I would bet money that the majority of the people in this thread who were posting negative comments have put little to no thought in how they feel about the issue, have had no personal experience with a transgender person, and think that (no matter what they might say about rights) the person is not really the gender they feel they are. I used to think the same way as some of these posters (not the violence stuff like the most fucked up ones do) and it took actually thinking and going past a gut reaction to get over that feeling. Hate crimes usually don't happen in crowded areas, no. You know why? Because the aggressor often follows the victim away from the witnesses to attack them. Vincent Chin, Matthew Shephard, and Brandon Teena are just a few prominent examples of hate crime victims who were followed away from the scene of "provocation" (often nothing more than simply being in the bar, for example); they weren't attacked in public, they were all attacked in more lowkey places and brutally murdered. If she outs herself to inebriated men who are not in a sound state of mind, she significantly increases the risk of being followed outside of the bar and attacked. And of course there are always risks, no one is denying that, but outing herself to a stranger who's had too much to drink increases those risks to an unnecessary amount, whether she ends up sleeping with him or not. However, especially with trans people, the risk is much higher - have you not heard of the Baltimore woman who was savagely beaten in a McDonald's simply for trying to use the bathroom? It's not like it was a deserted place - there were people in there taking videos and egging on the attackers. And that's at a fucking McDonald's. If that can happen at a McDonald's with good lighting and where most of the clientele is probably sober and thinking straight (no pun intended), I shudder to think what would happen at a bar with dim lights and where most people are drinking. I think there is no single answer. She has the right to tell someone or not, depending on how she safe she feels. I also feel that it is neither my choice, nor your choice, nor anyone's choice but hers, when, where, and to whom she comes out. I think that's what's immoral, is straight cisgendered men telling a transwoman how to live her life.
