None of us gave a shit about that guy's cake when Opie stomped it, and I don't think many of us give a shit about his cake now.
It was an inarguably shitty thing to do, however. That's where Opie goes wrong in his defense. No one is buying his argument that he and Andrew were best buddies and that he totally got the joke. The correct argument would be, "Yeah, it was a pretty nasty thing for me to do to a homeless guy, and while I did compensate him afterwards, it didn't give me the right to wreck his property. We were just willing to go pretty far for laughs, and sometimes you do things in the moment that you otherwise wouldn't."
That said, it's worth nowhere near the outrage that the SJWs are heaping on it. I only approve of it because it's Opie, and I enjoy bad things happening to him.
