It's not awful but it has the same problem Jefferies show had. It would be fine if it didn't pander to women by making sure there's at least one "aww" moment per episode that shows the lead has a sensitive side. And of course the just-out-of-college-age bombshell who's whip smart and delivers a ton of bright witticisms. That's realistic. Gotta get all those demographics.

The premise of the show is retarded. A magical hot chick with an unlimited bank account (the fact that she could afford to rent the studio for the full season alone...) comes into an old fuck-up's life to make all his dreams come true. I'm sure some feminist blogger could write about how it's a sexist male fantasy but whatever, it's a bad premise for the show.
Wouldn't the show be better & even have more comedic possibilities if it was just this. Denis Leary discovers he has this daughter, then discovers her amazing talents & puts his old band together and they have to start from broke-dick scratch? Wouldn't it be funnier if this old band had to learn pro-tools or band camp & had to deal with low rent producers from YouTube or something? It would make the show more relevant too.
Also there is a type of humor of that show that seems dated. Like all the humor about how hot his daughter is & how no one can control themselves cuz a hot chick exists in the world? It seems so "late 90s" Maxim magazine/beer commercial humor.
And, like anyone else can observe, the music is just terrible. It humiliates me to watch them perform these horrible songs. It's obviously Leary living out his rock star fantasy but goddammit does he stink at it.
Alan Sepinwall, professional fat TV critic, tore the show apart in a perfect way. My favorite line in his brutal deconstruction was "the only way to distinguish the songs that are meant to be good from the ones that are meant to be terrible is by how the other characters react to them."
Yep - after every song I kept waiting for the characters to call it shit but meanwhile they act like its great. I bet Denis Leary's favorite song is the Aerosmith song from "Armageddon"
The show is shit but I wish him well, and toast his continued success. Hopefully SDRR will get re-upped for many more seasons, if only for the reason that Bobby will become one of the growing list of people who become "too big for the show." Also, it will stick in Jimmy's craw.

I wouldn't go as far as saying it's terrible, but it's very mediocre. I enjoyed Rescue Me, but this show has been a disappointment so far.
